Uppsala University hereby declares the following position to be open for application:
Doctoral student in molecular evolution with the focus on genome evolution of microbial eukaryotes
at the Department of Genomics, Evolution and Systematics, Programme for Molecular Evolution.
Project description
Diplomonads are a group of anaerobic microbial eukaryotes that have two cell nuclei. The human intestinal parasite Giardia lamblia belongs to diplomonads, but there are also free-living members of the group. The project will study how genetic information is transferred between the two nuclei, among diplomonads, and between diplomonads and other organisms, over evolutionary time. The aim is an understanding how these and other evolutionary processes interact with various lifestyles within the group.
Comparative genomic methods will be used on data generated with next-generation sequencing methods from a diversity of diplomonads. The project will have a strong bioinformatic component, but also molecular biology methods may be included. The results from this project are relevant for epidemiological studies, although the main focus will be on a deeper understanding of genome evolution of microbial eukaryotes.

Organosilicon chemistry directed towards molecular electronics
A new constellation in molecular electronics is being formed at Uppsala University; the Uppsala University UniMolecular Electronics Center (U3MEC) composed of eight different research groups and with focus on molecular electronics based on single or small assemblies of molecules. U3MEC comprises expertise in chemistry, physics and engineering, experimentalists as well as theoreticians.
One PhD student position in the group of Prof. Henrik Ottosson at the Department of Biochemistry and Organic Chemistry is available. The project involves design and synthesis of novel organosilicon, -germanium, and -tin compounds, and characterization of their spectroscopic and electrochemical properties as well as assembly into nanoelectronics platforms for investigations of electron transport properties.

A PhD student position in synthetic organic chemistry directed towards design of novel compounds with potential functions as molecular electronics components is available in the group of Prof. Henrik Ottosson at the Department of Biochemistry and Organic Chemistry. The project will beside synthesis in organosilicon chemistry also include close interaction with computational chemists and physicists as well as experimental groups working with spectroscopy, electron microscopy and electron transport measurements.
The ideal candidate has an MSc degree with solid experience in synthetic organic/organometallic chemistry, but also an outspoken interest in physical/theoretical chemistry as well as physics. The project is interdisciplinary and an ability of the PhD student to go outside the traditional disciplines is appreciated.
The PhD position is for 4.5 years including 10% department duties such as assisting in courses at the undergraduate level. The start date is early 2007.
