United Kingdom - University of Strathclyde PhD Research Positions in Engergy and Environment

The mitigation of climate change effects necessitates a major transition towards an energy system that can provide energy services through low carbon technologies and processes. The recent award of a 4 year GBP 2.1M grant through an EPSRC/e.on UK strategic partnership to the Universities of Bath, Loughborough, Strathclyde, Surrey, East Anglia, Leeds, Imperial College and the Policy Studies Institute will focus on researching the nature and drivers that will facilitate this transition.

Two fully funded PhD studentships are immediately available at the University of Strathclyde as part of this grant. These posts will involve integrated modelling and simulation of the UK energy sector to explore and investigate transition pathways in realising a low carbon future with particular focus on network infrastructure. The research work will include development of national scale energy resource flow models for bulk and distance energy transportation, and analysis of the energy system infrastructure at multiple transition staging points. This research activity will support the development of feasible, low carbon energy enabling infrastructures for the UK.

This project offers an excellent opportunity for successful applicants to address fundamental challenges faced by the UK energy sector and influence their solution. The successful candidates will engage in high-priority research in the power and energy sector, and develop the necessary skills for a career in this area.

United Kingdom - University of Strathclyde PhD Studentship in Management Science

Applications are invited for a 3.5 year PhD scholarship, funded by an EPSRC Mathematics CASE award in conjunction with Simul8.

The aim of this research is to apply new methods from multivariate statistics and decision theory to support analysis of parameter uncertainty and parameter quantification in Discrete Event Simulation (DES). DES is concerned with developing complex stochastic models and obtaining inference on the influence that several input parameters have on specified performance measures through Monte Carlo simulation. Specifically this project will investigate the use of Empirical Bayesian methods which can use data from existing simulation runs at different input parameter settings to estimate the variability of output measures as input parameter settings are changed.

The department of Management Science is an energetic research active department with interests that cover a wide spectrum of interdisciplinary applied operational research. Information on the department can be found at www.managementscience.org

Information about Simul8 can be found at www.simul8.com

Applicants should be UK residents with a 1st or upper 2nd class degree in a quantitative subject area. A masters degree in Operational Research / Management Science/Statistics would be an advantage, but is not essential.

United Kingdom - AWE Sponsored PhD Studentship in Polymer Nanocomposites at University of Strathclyde

AWE sponsored PhD Studentship
Theory of phase separation in polymer nanocomposites
Department of Chemical and Process Engineering

The Department of Chemical and Process Engineering invites applications for a postgraduate student to study the theory of phase separation in polymer nanocomposites. Specifically, the student will develop and apply techniques based on the density functional theory of classical fluids and integral equation theory to model these systems. This project is sponsored by AWE, a division of the MOD.

Candidates will have obtained at least a 2:1 in a highly numerate discipline, preferably physics or mathematics, prior to the start of the studentship, which commences September 2007. An interest in theory, particularly statistical mechanics and chemical physics, and computer programming would be a distinct advantage. The student will receive a (non-taxable) stipend of £15,000 per annum, which is well above the basic EPSRC rate.
