United Kingdom - University of Sheffield Postdoctoral Research Associate in Animal and Plant Sciences

Postdoctoral Research Associate
Department of Animal and Plant Sciences
Ref. No. R05516

This is an ideal opportunity to join an established and productive research project in a large high profile 5* research department with a strong commitment to research-led teaching (QAA score: 24/24) Applicants must have experience of behavioural/ecological fieldwork, preferably on birds. Experience in the use of multivariate statistical analysis would be advantageous. A clean driving licence and a bird-ringing licence are also desirable. Applicants must also have a PhD, or equivalent experience, in a relevant discipline. The post is for one year with extension subject to funding and is tenable from 1 October 2007 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Report to: Professor B J Hatchwell

Main Activities and Responsibilities:

  • Assist in maintaining a colour-ringed study population of long-tailed tits.
  • Monitor breeding activities, requiring intensive fieldwork from March to June (e.g. locating all long-tailed tits in the study site).
  • Measure the natural variation in begging signals of nestlings and the provisioning rates of parents
  • Conduct non-invasive field experiments (e.g. playback of nestling calls) to manipulate the provisioning rate of parents.
  • Collect and analyse date for comparative studies of parental care strategies in cooperative and non-cooperative bird species.
  • Manage the long-term data set, analyse data, prepare papers and disseminate results.
  • Undertake other duties as requested by the PI.

Postdoctoral Research Associate
Department of Chemistry
Ref. No. R05474

The postholder will work with Dr Iain Coldham in the area of synthetic organic chemistry, particularly the resolution of chiral organolithium compounds. Applicants should have a doctorate (or equivalent research experience), and possess initiative and excellent interpersonal and organisational skills. Experience in organic chemistry is essential. The post is funded by EPSRC and is tenable from 1 October 2007 or within six months thereafter, for a period of three years.

Main Activities & Responsibilities:

  • Design, develop and refine experiments in synthetic organic chemistry in order to obtain reliable data.
  • Carry out research experiments, in particular, the preparation of chiral ligands and their use for the resolution of chiral organolithium species.
  • Analyse and record data to aid the design of future research and produce useful findings for others.
  • Prepare papers for journals / presentations either in-house or at national / international conferences or seminars to disseminate research findings.
  • Write supporting documents to contribute to and support the work of the Research Group, eg reports and interim reports. Carry out administrative roles as required.

UK - University of Sheffield PhD Studentship in Chemical / Process Engineering

PhD studentship Microfluidic protein and peptide separations

Department Of Chemical And Process Engineering And Department Of Engineering Materials
University of Sheffield

Supervisors: Professor Phillip C Wright and Dr Sally L McArthur

Working in part of a large team, this project is concerned with the characterisation of the behaviour of proteins and peptides at liquid-liquid interfaces. The ultimate aim is to incorporating this knowledge into the next generation of high throughput microfluidic technologies for proteomics applications.

You will need to be able to work in a multidisciplinary team. Students should have a good first degree (an hons 2i and above) in a chemical or biochemical science or allied discipline.
