Research Fellow (PhD position) - Mathematics and Numerics for Inverse Problems

At the Department of Mathematics/CIPR a 3-year position as Research Fellow (PhD position) is available within the area of Mathematics and Numerics for Inverse Problems. Work location will be at CIPR.

The project, which is financed by the Norwegian Research Council and several energy companies, is collaboration between research groups at CIPR, University of Bergen and CMA, University of Oslo (http://www.cma.uio.no ). The candidate will participate in an international network of researchers focusing on development of novel computational methods for solving inverse problems. Such methods are very important within, for example, modelling and remote monitoring of flows in petroleum reservoirs and modelling and remote monitoring of geological storage of CO2. The candidate will focus in particular on development and analysis of inversion methods based on more than one data type. We seek a candidate with background from at least one of the fields: applied/numerical mathematics, physics, or mathematical statistics.

The research fellow must take part in the Universitys approved PhD programme leading to the degree within a time limit of 3 years. Application for admission to the PhD programme, including a project plan outline for the training module, will be worked out in collaboration with the research group in question.

The fellowship period may be reduced if the successful applicant has held previous employment as research fellow.

Norway - University of Bergen PhD Research Fellowship in Mathematics

At the Department of Mathematics, University of Bergen or SINTEF ICT, Oslo, a 3-year position as Research Fellow (PhD position) is available within the project

Geological Storage of CO2: Mathematical Modelling and Risk Analysis.

The fellowship is financed by the Research Council of Norway, StatoilHydro and Shell. Work location will be either at the University of Bergen or at SINTEF ICT in Oslo.

The project is a cooperation between research groups at the University of Bergen and SINTEF ICT in Oslo. The candidate will participate in an international research network devoted to the development of analytical and numerical tools to be used in risk assessment analysis of geological storage of CO2. The candidate will in particular focus on the development of streamline methods for simulating CO2 injection. We seek a candidate with background from some of the fields: numerical analysis and programming, differential equations, and reservoir modelling and simulation. At the Department of Informatics a position as research fellow (PhD position) is open for 3 years in the «ParComb» project. The project is aimed at designing parallel algorithms for combinatorial problems in scientific computing. The type of problems studied includes, among others, different kinds of colouring and matching problems motivated from applications in scientific computing. Norway - Quota Scheme Postgraduate Scholarships Program

A. OVERVIEW
The goal of the Quota Scheme is to give students from developing countries in the South, Central- and East-Europe and Central-Asia, relevant education that would also benefit their home countries when they return after graduation.

The programme also contributes to strengthen Norwegian institutions of higher education’s participation in global knowledge cooperation.

The Norwegian government provides scholarships for students from developing countries in the South and countries of Central- and East-Europe and Central-Asia under the Quota Scheme. The overall objective of the Quota Scheme is to promote the internationalisation of higher education.

Today, the scheme provides funding for a total of 1100 students, 800 of them from developing countries in the South and 300 from Central- and East-Europe and Central-Asia.

Each year universities and university colleges in Norway are allocated a certain number of quota students. Most of the universities and university colleges in Norway offer courses and educational programmes in English. The scheme normally includes courses at the Master and Ph.D. level, in addition to certain professional degrees. In order to locate a programme eligible under the scheme, please contact the Norwegian institutions directly.

Scholarships
The Norwegian State Educational Loan Fund (Statens Lånekasse) is responsible for managing the financial support provided for the Quota students. Each student receives the same amount of money as a Norwegian student would do in an equivalent educational programme. About 30 per cent of the amount is given as a grant and 70 per cent as a loan. However, the loan portion is waived when the student returns to his/her home country after completing the course of study. Normally, the financial support will not not exceed a time span of four years for one definite study plan, or a combination of two programmes.

Research Fellow in Scientific Computing/Applied Mathematics with application to CO2-Sequestration– re-announcement

A three-year position as research fellow (PhD position) is available at the Department of Mathematics.

The position is part of the project “Geological Storage of CO2: Mathematical Modelling and Risk Assessment”, a joint effort of the University of Bergen and SINTEF Applied Mathematics, Oslo. The project aims at strengthening the scientific understanding of the risks associated with storage of CO2 for the purpose of reducing atmospheric emissions. The investigations are related to the study of non-linear partial differential equations arising from the multi-phase flow in porous media. Methods from Scientific Computing will be applied, i.e. the investigations will involve mathematical and numerical models, numerical simulations and their physical and mathematical interpretation.

The candidate is expected to work in the multidisciplinary environment of the project (applied mathematics, computational science and engineering). The candidate is expected to spend 3 to 6 months abroad collaborating with international partners.

Applicants must hold a master’s degree in mathematics, physics or a similar education, or have submitted their master thesis for assessment by the application deadline. It is a prerequisite, however, that the examination results are out within 4 weeks of the closing date for submitting the master thesis.
