Japan - 2008 Matsumae International Foundation Fellowship

Eligibility requirements:

  • Applicants of non-Japanese nationality who meet all of the following general eligibility requirements are invited to submit the required application documents (available from the Embassy of Japan’s Culture and Information Section).
  • Applicants must hold a Doctorate degree, or have a minimum of two years of research experience after receipt of a Master’s degree, or be recognized by the Foundation as possessing equivalent academic qualifications.
  • Applicants must not be over 40 years of age at the time of application.
  • Applicants must have sufficient conversational ability in English or Japanese to prevent insurmountable difficulties during their research activities in Japan.
  • Applicants should not have been in Japan previously. Application must be submitted from the applicant’s home country. Under no circumstances will an application be accepted from a person already in Japan.
  • Applicants who have firm positions and professions in their home nations should apply from their countries, and should return to their countries on completion of their research activities in Japan.
  • Applicants who have previously been invited by the Matsumae International Foundation are not eligible for this fellowship programme.
  • Applicants must be of sound health and not physically handicapped in any way which would prevent them from carrying out research in Japan.

Fields of Study
Fields of study such as natural science, engineering and medicine are given first priority.

We are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic researcher, with interests in cancer biology/glycobiology. You will join a well-established research group with long-standing interest in the relationship of cellular glycosylation and gastrointestinal cancer. The project, funded by North West Cancer Research Fund, will investigate the interactions of dietary lectins with epithelial cancer cells and will particularly look at receptormediated signal transduction induced by lectins. Experience in protein phosphoryolation and purification will be advantageous. The post is available for one year initially with the possibility of extension to three years subject to funding.

Switzerland - ETH Zurich Doctoral Assistantship in Applied Microeconomics and Econometrics

The Center for Energy Policy and Economics at the Department of Management, Technology and Economics, ETH Zurich (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology), invites applications for up to two Research Assistant positions for three years. The starting date is expected to be in early 2007, but subject to budgetary approval, might be delayed for a few months.

In addition to their PhD research and related courses, the successful candidates will provide assistance in research projects and/or contribute in the department’s teaching activities. The topics will be in Energy and Environmental Economics with a strong focus on empirical research.

A good command of English is required. In addition, one of the positions requires excellent communication and writing skills in German.

Netherlands - Utrecht University PhD Researcher in Social Science at Faculty of Social and Behavioura

As PhD-candidate you are part of the joint programme of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Utrecht University/Faculty of Social Sciences/Cultural Anthropology. This programme is known as the IS-academy.

The subject of research is “Poverty reduction and good governance”. Within the wide scope of research on this subject is chosen for research on two themes: “the political dimension of poverty reduction and drivers of change” with a focus on two core questions:

  • What are the political dimensions of poverty reduction and what factors determine shifts from exclusion to inclusion of poverty concerns in political arenas and policy agendas?
  • What are the political dimensions of so-called “failing states”, particularly in relation to intrastate social violence and political conflict?

The project is situated within the research programme “Political conflict, cultural trauma and social reconciliation” (CTR) which is part of the Research Centre CERES. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will be involved in the guiding and supervision of the research projects.

Establishment of the National scholarship programme for the support of mobility of students, PhD. students, university* teachers and researchers was approved by the Government of the Slovak Republic under the terms of MINERVA programme. MINERVA is official governmental programme for the development of knowledge-based economy in Slovakia. It is based on the Competitiveness Strategy of Slovakia until 2010: the National Lisbon Strategy that was adopted by the Government of the SR in February 2005. The aim of MINERVA is to pursue activities to support development of so called knowledge-based economy in Slovakia. These activities focus on four basic areas: 1st science, R&D and innovations; 2nd education and employment; 3rd business environment and 4th information society.

The National scholarship programme of the Slovak Republic is funded by the Ministry of Education of the Slovak Republic.

A. DAAD Long-term Research Grants for Doctoral Studies
Objective

Target group for research grants :
excellently-qualified teaching staff from universities researchers from research institutions in any field of study/research applicants from private sectors with at least two years of working experience
Note: Any teaching staff predominantly or exclusively involved in non-degree programs are not eligible.

Research grants can be used to carry out :
research projects at a German higher education institution for the purpose of gaining a doctorate in Indonesia (according to the “DAAD Sandwich Model” - see annex 3) , age limit of 35 at the time of application research projects at a German university for the purpose of gaining a doctorate in Germany , age limit of 31 at the time of application

Scholarship duration
The length of the grant is set by the grant committee during the selection depending on the project in question and on the applicant’s work schedule. In the case of full doctoral programs in Germany the scholarship will be granted for up to three years. For sandwich scholarships, the research stay in Germany will be supported for a maximum of two years.

Support can only be provided for the completion of a full doctoral program in Germany when special support policy reasons exist. Such reasons include, for example, the lack of comparable research or academic supervision opportunities in the home country or when the doctoral topic requires several years of research in Germany. Even when support has been awarded for a full doctoral program, that award will be limited to one year at a time. Extensions of the scholarship then depend on whether or not the evaluation finds the previous award period has been successfully completed.

France - Postdoctoral Fellowships For Training in Cancer Research 2007-2008

Applications for training fellowships in 2007-2008 are invited from junior scientists from low- or medium-resource countries wishing to complete their training in those aspects of cancer research related to the Agency’s mission: to coordinate and conduct both epidemiological and laboratory research into the causes of cancer. Disciplines covered include: epidemiology, biostatistics, environmental chemical carcinogenesis, cancer etiology and prevention, infection and cancer, molecular cell biology, molecular genetics, molecular pathology and mechanisms of carcinogenesis, with emphasis on interdisciplinary projects.

Fellowships are tenable at the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) in Lyon, France working in a research Group. Applicants are eligible from any country other than those classified as high-income economies by the World Bank. The fellowship is for a period of one year, with the possibility of an extension for a second year subject to satisfactory appraisal.
