The University of Manchester
MRC Advanced Course Masters Studentships 2008/9
MRes Public Health/Primary Care
School of Community Based Medicine - Faculty of Medical and Human Sciences
The School of Community Based Medicine is delighted to be able to offer two MRC studentships for successful applicants to the Masters of Research (MRes) in Public Health/Primary Care from September 2008.
The awards, MRC Advanced Course Masters studentships, are targeted at areas of public health and health related research that are not currently served by existing courses, and where such training is likely to strengthen the academic base of the field or discipline concerned. They are in recognition of the unique skills training and research focus of the MRes, which is the first Masters to offer entirely web-based training in Public Health. The studentships will cover the UK/EU rate of tuition fee as well as provide a maintenance stipend of £12, 940 per annum (£12, 940 on a pro-rata basis for part-time students).
The MRes programme aims to provide students with the skills needed to develop a critical evidence-based approach to the promotion of public health and primary care. The studentships would be suitable for those wishing to develop research skills before undertaking a PhD in Primary Care or Public Health, as well as meeting the requirements of continuing professional development, top up training for voluntary registration, or public health trainees and the MFPH examination.

About Harvard School of Public Health
The Harvard School of Public Health (hsph) is the direct descendent of the first professional public health training program in America. In contrast to medicine, which focuses on specific individuals and their treatment, the basic strategy of public health is to prevent disease in broad populations, an approach that is far reaching, efficient, and equitable.
The school has a celebrated history and global perspective. Working in over forty countries worldwide, members of the hsph faculty perform path-breaking research in such areas as hiv/aids, environmental hazards, reform of health systems, nutrition, genetic markers, health disparities, and the global burden of disease.
Located in the heart of the Harvard University Longwood campus, hsph adjoins Harvard Medical School and School of Dental Medicine, the Countway Library, and Harvard-affiliated hospitals such as Brigham and Women’s, the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, and Children’s Hospital.
About Yerby Postdoctoral Fellowship
The Yerby Postdoctoral Fellowship Program draws on the rich research environment and intellectual resources of one of the world’s premier public health training institutions. Named for Dr. Alonzo Smythe Yerby, an African-American pioneer in public health, this initiative is geared toward expanding the diversity of those entering academic public health. The program creates a bridge
between academic training in health-related disciplines and entry-level faculty positions at institutions throughout the United States.
The goal of the program is to advance the intellectual and professional development of each Yerby fellow. Under the guidance of a senior hsph faculty member with compatible interests, fellows develop their research agendas, gain experience in publishing papers in peer-reviewed journals and obtaining grant support, participate in a variety of professional development workshops, and increase their teaching expertise.
Yerby fellows receive a competitive salary with benefits for one year, renewable for a second year. Up to five new fellowships are awarded annually.

PhD Studentship
Inter-country Differences in the Effectiveness of Medical Interventions: a Study using “Panoramic” Meta-analysis
Department of Public Health and Epidemiology
Applications are invited for a PhD studentship funded for three years by the MATCH collaboration at the University of Birmingham, Department of Public Health and Epidemiology. (Annual stipend: £12,600).
First supervisor: Dr Russell Bowater
Second supervisor: Mr Alan Girling
Start date: September 2007 or as soon as possible thereafter.
Closing date for applications: 14th September 2007.
Project outline
Differences between the results of clinical trials or observational studies conducted in different countries (e.g. UK and USA) are often considered to be of great importance by regulators and reimbursement agencies. The expectation of such differences may prevent changes in clinical practice in a particular country despite quite conclusive evidence from other countries that a certain clinical intervention is beneficial. For example, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) generally does not give licences to new treatments on the basis of evidence from clinical trials that have been conducted outside the USA.

The University of Birmingham
School of Medicine
Division of Primary Care, Public and Occupational Health
Department of Public Health and Epidemiology
Unit of Genetic Epidemiology
PhD Student (Full time, 4 years)
Department
The Department of Public Health and Epidemiology from the University of Birmingham has a long-standing history in research in cancer and chronic disease epidemiology. The achievements in that area have been acknowledged by the most recent UK-wide research assessment exercise, attaining the highest score of 5*. The Department has grown considerably in the last 5 years and currently comprises 87 staff (58 academic and 29 support). Recently, they have extended their scope to genetic epidemiology.
The aim of the new unit of Genetic Epidemiology, led by professor Maurice Zeegers, is to develop and deliver evidence based public health interventions through the thorough examination of potential genetic and environmental influences on the aetiology, prognosis and treatment of chronic diseases. The unit further aims to develop high quality and distinguished research programmes by performing extensive research in less investigated geographical areas and by focusing on distinctive phenotypes, such as urologic cancer and paediatrics.
Current and forthcoming projects in this unit include four environmental and genetic case control studies on bladder and prostate cancer in South East China, Belgium, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom, a programme consisting of one of the largest clinical trials, cohort study and biobank on bladder cancer prognosis, a prospective twin study in Birmingham, a twin’s survey (the advertised project) and a methods development study to develop robust cDNA microarray designs.
Project
Methodology
The objectives of this twin study are
1) to establish a new twins cohort for long-term follow-up;
2) to identify and collect information on anthropometry, child development, CVD risk factors, and health;
3) to measure the concordance in these phenotypes between monozygotic and dizygotic twins;
4) to determine the relationship between parental characteristics and twinning;
5) and to determine the relative contributions of heritability (genes) and environment to child growth, development and health. The PhD student will manage this study.
