PhD Opportunity
Development of Dynamic yield models for conifers, broadleaves and mixtures

The University College Dublin, the forest management research company Purser Tarleton Russell Ltd. and the semi state forestry company Coillte Ltd., have together, started a research project called: STANDMODEL – The Development of Dynamic yield models for conifers, broadleaves and mixtures. The project is funded by COFORD, the National Council for Forest Research and Development in Ireland.

The Project Coordinator is looking for a PhD Student for this project for 3 years.

Background to the project
Until recently, forest growth and yield modelling in Ireland was carried out using British Forestry Commission Yield Models for Forest Management. However since 1999, Coillte has led a project to develop Irish Dynamic Yield Models. To date this project called DynamicYield, which is part-funded by COFORD, has delivered and launched a validated and working dynamic Yield Model for Sitka spruce, lodgepole pine, Norway spruce, Douglas fir and Scots pine. The approach taken in stand level dynamic yield modelling in Ireland to date has been to follow the state space modelling methodology, consisting of a multivariate extension of the Bertalanffy-Richards model developed by García. The species of particular interest for the STANDMODEL project are ash and Japanese larch, while models will also be required for other broadleaf species such as oak, sycamore, alder and birch.

France - 2009 / 2010 Eiffel Scholarships Programme for Master and PhD Students

The French Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs launched the Eiffel excellence scholarship programme in January 1999 to support French centres of higher education in their international outreach initiatives, in a context of mounting competition among developed countries to attract elite students from overseas. In 2005, the scheme was extended with the Eiffel Doctorate programme, addressing high-calibre PhD students.

For greater clarity, the French Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs is now introducing a single application procedure for its Eiffel Scholarship and Eiffel Doctorate Scholarship programmes.

The new Eiffel programme thus covers two types of course:

  • Master’s postgraduate degree course
  • Ten-month co-tutored or co-managed component (preferably second or third year) of PhD course

The objectives of the Eiffel excellence programme run by the French Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs remain unchanged, the first being to offer French higher-education opportunities for future public- and private-sector decision-makers in three priority areas: science; economics & management; and law & political science.

United Kingdom - 2008 Cranfield University PhD Studentship in Distributed Leadership in Programme Management

PhD Studentship
Distributed leadership in programme management
International Centre for Programme Management

Cranfield School of Management - one of Europe’s top management schools - is offering this PhD studentship within its International Centre for Programme Management, a world-leading hub for research into this important emerging discipline. The studentship is tenable for four years from October 2008.

In business and government, programmes are used to transform strategies and policies into desired outcomes and benefits. Programmes usually consist of multiple related projects. The concept of the project manager as a single point of integrative project leadership and responsibility is widely accepted as a fundamental principle of good practice. Now, professional guidelines in the emerging discipline of programme management advocate a similar single, integrative leadership status for the role of the programme manager. In practice, however, the leadership of programmes is inevitably distributed or shared among a changing group of individuals. The collective nature of programme leadership has important consequences for the behaviours and mindsets of individuals and for the governance structures within which they operate. There is a significant opportunity and need for the creation of new knowledge in this domain, and the development of new theories based on empirical evidence.
