USA / Japan - 2008 Abe Fellowship in Social Sciences (Policy-Related Topics)

The Social Science Research Council (SSRC), the Japan Foundation Center for Global Partnership (CGP), and the American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) announce the annual Abe Fellowship Program competition. Funding for the Abe Fellowship Program is provided by CGP.

The Purpose of the Fellowship
The Abe Fellowship is designed to encourage international multidisciplinary research on topics of pressing global concern. The program seeks to foster the development of a new generation of researchers who are interested in policy-relevant topics of long-range importance and who are willing to become key members of a bilateral and global research network built around such topics. It strives especially to promote a new level of intellectual cooperation between the Japanese and American academic and professional communities committed to and trained for advancing global understanding and problem solving.

Research support to individuals is at the core of the Abe Fellowship Program. Applications are welcome from scholars and non-academic research professionals. The objectives of the program are to foster high quality research in the social sciences and the humanities, to build new collaborative networks of researchers around the three thematic foci of the program, to bring new data and new data resources to the attention of those researchers, and to obtain from them a commitment to a comparative or transnational line of inquiry.

Successful applicants will be those individuals whose work and interests match these program goals. Abe Fellows are expected to demonstrate a long-term commitment to these goals by participating in program activities over the course of their careers.

The Abe Fellowship Research Agenda
Applicants are invited to submit proposals for research in the social sciences and related disciplines relevant to any one or any combination of the three themes below. Research proposals bearing on these themes may address issues related to human security, multilateralism, bilateralism, U.S.-Japan relations, transnational economic relations, the empowerment of peoples and communities, and sustainable development, among others. The themes are:

  • Traditional and non-traditional approaches to security and diplomacy: Appropriate research topics include transnational terrorism, internal ethnic and religious strife, infectious diseases, food safety, climate change, and non-proliferation, as well as the role of cultural initiatives in peace building.
  • Global and regional economic issues: Suitable topics include regional and bilateral trade arrangements, globalization and the mitigation of its adverse consequences, sustainable urbanization, and environmental degradation.
  • The role of civil society: Appropriate issues include demographic change, immigration, the role of NPOs and NGOs as champions of the public interest, social enterprise, and corporate social responsibility.

Across the Program’s three dominant themes, priority is given to projects that demonstrate important contributions to intellectual and/or policy debates and break new theoretical or empirical ground. Applicants are expected to show how the proposed project goes beyond previous work on the topic and builds on prior skills to move into new intellectual terrain.

Japan - 2008 UNU-IAS PhD and Postdoctoral Fellowships Programmes in Sustainable Development

The United Nations University Institute of Advanced Studies (UNU-IAS) is now accepting applications for its three fellowship programmes:

  • UNU-IAS PhD Fellowships,
  • UNU-IAS Postdoctoral Fellowships, and
  • JSPS-UNU Postdoctoral Fellowships

The closing date for applications is 25 April 2008.

UNU-IAS is a multi-thematic, interdisciplinary, research and training centre located in Yokohama, Japan. The Institute’s fellowship programmes provide young scientists, policy makers, and developing country scholars with the opportunity to expand their intellectual vision beyond a single scientific field.

The fellowship programme provides the successful applicant with a unique opportunity to:

  • develop and advance their research under the supervision of a UNU-IAS or UNU faculty member and contribute to the overall research agenda of the Institute,
  • widen their research interests and professional networks by working in the international and multi-disciplinary context of the UNU-IAS and UNU, and with its wider network of Japanese universities and research institutes, as well as international collaborators,
  • become exposed to the workings of the international and multilateral policy process and the broader UN system, and
  • link with other UNU-IAS and UNU PhD and Postdoctoral fellows.

The fellows are resident at UNU-IAS in Yokohama or UNU in Tokyo, Japan for the full term of the fellowship. This gives the PhD and Postdoctoral fellows the opportunity to gain from the broader research programme of lectures, seminars, workshops and conferences arranged by the UNU-IAS and UNU. UNU’s close institutional links with Japanese affiliated professors and visiting professors from key universities and think tanks in Japan also allows fellows to link into the broader Japanese academic and research community. Since the start of the fellowship programme at UNU-IAS in 1996, more than 160 young scholars, 70% of which from the developing world, have benefited from collaboration with UNU-IAS/UNU and Japanese scholars in this way.

Japan - 2008 University of Tokyo Master’s Scholarship Program in Sustainability Science

Master’s Program in Sustainability Science is a new International master’s program to train internationally-minded professionals that can help create a sustainable society. All lectures and practical courses will be carried in English, and those that complete the program are presented with a “Master of Sustainability Science”.

This program started in October, 2007 as a cross-sectional program between five departments in the Institute of Environmental Studies, Graduate School of Frontier Sciences, The University of Tokyo, also supported by Transdisciplinary Initiative for Global Sustainability (TIGS), the University of Tokyo and Integrated Research System for Sustainability Science (IR3S).

This program will provide students with the basic knowledge and concepts necessary to build a sustainable society and features a unique curriculum which emphasizes exercises that enable them to master a diverse set of skills. Students from many different specializations and cultural backgrounds give serious thought to issues related to sustainability through exercises and projects and acquire practical knowledge and skills by stimulating one another intellectually.

Admissions
Principally, there are two ways for admitting to Master’s Program in Sustainability Science (MPSS):

  • an international admission for international applicants (those without Japanese nationality) through a screening of application materials so that students from abroad may participate
  • an entrance examination held in August in Kashiwa, Japan.

International Admission by a Screening of Application Materials
Admission of international applicants (those without Japanese nationality) to MPSS is determined by examining application documents, so that students from abroad need not to visit Japan only for taking an examination.

In Addition, MPSS expects students to concentrate on their study, therefore the program will prefer qualified students with sufficient financial source, i.e. scholarships.
