France - Institut TELECOM PhD Fellowship in Medical Image Analysis

Three-Year Ph.D. Fellowship in Medical Image Analysis at Institut TELECOM / TELECOM & Management SudParis, France (www.institut-telecom.fr / www.it-sudparis.eu)

LABORATORY: ARTEMIS Department (www-artemis.int-evry.fr)

RESEARCH SUBJECT: Spatio-temporal statistical variational models for the quantitative assessment of myocardial perfusion in MRI.

DESCRIPTION: This doctoral research aims at elaborating non supervised computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) tools for the quantitative assessment of myocardial perfusion in Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI).

First-pass perfusion MRI is widely used for diagnosing cardiovascular pathologies and evaluating their physiological impact on heart tissues.

Myocardial perfusion is assessed by monitoring the MR signal enhancement during the first-pass transit of a vascular contrast agent through the cardiac chambers and muscle. To this end, the heart is partitioned into a set of anatomical segments according to a standardized subdivision model of the myocardium. For each segment, a so-called first-pass curve, defined
as the regional average MR signal value as a function of time, is then computed from which a set of clinically-relevant parameters are finally derived. Quantitative perfusion assessment is achieved by comparing the estimated parameters to normative values.

Automated perfusion assessment is faced with the complex problem of segmenting the myocardium in image sequences with high nonlinear contrast variations (with possible pathology-induced alterations) and non rigid motion artefacts originating from respiration and cardiac deformations.

France - 2009 / 2010 Eiffel Scholarships Programme for Master and PhD Students

The French Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs launched the Eiffel excellence scholarship programme in January 1999 to support French centres of higher education in their international outreach initiatives, in a context of mounting competition among developed countries to attract elite students from overseas. In 2005, the scheme was extended with the Eiffel Doctorate programme, addressing high-calibre PhD students.

For greater clarity, the French Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs is now introducing a single application procedure for its Eiffel Scholarship and Eiffel Doctorate Scholarship programmes.

The new Eiffel programme thus covers two types of course:

  • Master’s postgraduate degree course
  • Ten-month co-tutored or co-managed component (preferably second or third year) of PhD course

The objectives of the Eiffel excellence programme run by the French Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs remain unchanged, the first being to offer French higher-education opportunities for future public- and private-sector decision-makers in three priority areas: science; economics & management; and law & political science.

France - INRA Postdoc Position in Statistical Genetics

18 months postdoc position at The Biometry and Artificial Intelligence Unit of INRA (French National Institute for Agricultural Research) in Toulouse, France.

The project, funded by the French Research Agency, aims at incorporating linkage disequilibrium into linkage mapping analysis, in order to fine map QTL. It consists in developing statistical methods using linkage disequilibrium for predicting similarity of genitor alleles in a multiple families design, and developing the necessary software tools.

The aim is to attribute, at every locus of the genome, for the alleles of the genitors in the design, (i) a measurement that accurately reflects the identity by descent probability with the ancestral alleles, or (ii) a probable coalescence tree to enable ancestral alleles to be tracked.

France - INSA Lyon PhD Studentship in Applied Mathematics

PhD vacancy at INSA de Lyon LaMCoS
Multi physics & multi phase modeling in lubrication

Host laboratory
LaMCoS - Laboratoire de Mécanique des Contacts et des Structures, TMI group
INSA-Lyon, CNRS UMR5259, http://lamcos.insa-lyon.fr

Context
Lubrication of machine elements represents nowadays important environmental, economical and technical issues. Minimization of friction losses (environmental and economical aspects) and film thickness reduction (technical aspect) in lubricated devices lead to new operating conditions and among them the early lubricating film breakdown or the presence of multi phase flow. The work conducted in our group so far showed the interest in developing multi physic models[1]. However the initial numerical approach should be left and a new modeling strategy is to be developed. SKF - Engineering & Research Centre (based in the Netherlands) supports this research activity since the early phase in 2005. In addition of its financial contribution, the company also provides a part time visiting professor.

France - University of Franche-Comté PhD Scholarship in Spectral Analysis of Phase Noise and Frequency Stability of Oscillators

Ph.D. Training Opportunity & Stipend – starting fall 2008

Spectral analysis of phase noise and frequency stability of oscillators
proposed byEnrico Rubiola

FEMTO-ST Institute, Dept. of Time and Frequency
CNRS et University of Franche Comte

Subject
Time and frequency have a privileged role in physics and applications because they are the most precisely measured physical quantities. The wrist watch, for example, is the only artifact accurate within 1E-5 - 1E-6 at a cost affordable to all consumers. Atomic clocks exhibit the amazing accuracy of 1E-15, and a stability better by a factor 10. Though the accuracy of 1E-15 relates only to fundamental physics and metrology, short term stability is a major concern in telecommunications, space applications and radars.

Traditionally, frequency stability is measured in the time domain and described using wavelet variances known as the Allan variance sigma_y^2(tau) and its modified versions. The variable tau is the measurement time. The stability depends on the measurement time in the same way of a balance, which is less “precise” when the mass to be measured is very different from 1 kg.

France - University of Nice Sophia Antipolis and OFCE PhD Scholarship in Innovation and Market Selection

PhD Scholarship Title
Innovation and Market Selection: an Evolutionary Approach

Supervisor
Jean-Luc Gaffard Professor of Economics, University of Nice Sophia Antipolis and CNRS-GREDEG, Head of the Department for Research on Innovation and Competition (OFCE Centre de Recherche en Economie de Sciences-Po)

Research Project
Aggregate productivity growth is the outcome of incumbent firms adopting new and superior techniques and (or) entering firms replacing exiting firms with better technologies. This research project will concern market selection mechanisms by characterising innovation as a process of selection (or acquisition) of more productive technologies within firms and a process of selection of firms itself. It will analyse both what happens inside the firms and what happens between firms on the market when firms are engaged in innovative or imitative processes. The first part of the research will be devoted to making a survey of empirical and theoretical analyses of industrial dynamics, which should focus on the relation between innovation and competition. The second part of the research will build a theoretical model of industrial dynamics in order to analyse rivalry and competition among heterogeneous firms. It will determine the market conditions that allow firms to capture productivity gains from past investments. These market conditions are critical to haracterising the dynamic equilibrium, similar to a so-called natural market structure. The third and last part will consist in developing an empirical analysis of the determinants of firms’ entry and exit, using French census data. In its conclusion, this research will address critical issues concerning the objectives and channels of industrial policies defined as policies that support development of firms and innovation.
