SUMITRO FELLOWS
2009 GRANT APPLICATIONS
The United States Indonesia Society (USINDO) invites applications for its two 2009 travel/study grants for post-doctoral scholars, Ph.D. candidates, senior academics, and otherwise professionally qualified candidates to engage in field research in Indonesia on an economic or political-economic topic. One grant is available to United States citizens and permanent residents in the United States with a specific project relating to the political economy of Indonesia. The Indonesian Sumitro Fellowship is open to an Indonesian citizen with a project related to the Indonesia-United States bilateral relationship. Previous travel to, and experience in, Indonesia or the United States (for Indonesian Sumitro applicants) is desirable but not necessarily a requirement. The deadline for the 2009 Sumitro Fellows Applications is Friday, October 31, 2008.
The Sumitro Fellows program honors Dr. Sumitro Djojohadikusumo, Indonesia’s senior economist and advisor to USINDO, who passed away in 2001. An architect of Indonesia’s modern economy, Professor Sumitro headed the faculty of economics at the University of Indonesia, and was later a minister of trade and minister of state for research.
Professor Sumitro was also the driving force behind a 1950’s program of the Ford Foundation which sent Indonesian economists to U.S. academic institutions for advanced degrees. Many attended the University of California at Berkeley and the group came to be known as the “Berkeley Mafia” when its members assumed many key cabinet posts in subsequent decades.
The Sumitro Fellows grants for the 2009 application cycle are $10 000 each.

Three-Year Ph.D. Fellowship in Medical Image Analysis at Institut TELECOM / TELECOM & Management SudParis, France (www.institut-telecom.fr / www.it-sudparis.eu)
LABORATORY: ARTEMIS Department (www-artemis.int-evry.fr)
RESEARCH SUBJECT: Spatio-temporal statistical variational models for the quantitative assessment of myocardial perfusion in MRI.
DESCRIPTION: This doctoral research aims at elaborating non supervised computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) tools for the quantitative assessment of myocardial perfusion in Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI).
First-pass perfusion MRI is widely used for diagnosing cardiovascular pathologies and evaluating their physiological impact on heart tissues.
Myocardial perfusion is assessed by monitoring the MR signal enhancement during the first-pass transit of a vascular contrast agent through the cardiac chambers and muscle. To this end, the heart is partitioned into a set of anatomical segments according to a standardized subdivision model of the myocardium. For each segment, a so-called first-pass curve, defined
as the regional average MR signal value as a function of time, is then computed from which a set of clinically-relevant parameters are finally derived. Quantitative perfusion assessment is achieved by comparing the estimated parameters to normative values.
Automated perfusion assessment is faced with the complex problem of segmenting the myocardium in image sequences with high nonlinear contrast variations (with possible pathology-induced alterations) and non rigid motion artefacts originating from respiration and cardiac deformations.

The Jena School for Microbial Communication (JSMC) is funded by the German Excellence Initiative. It conceptionally combines different research areas (microbial communities, interactions with plant, animal and human hosts and environmental interactions) to a comprehensive picture of microbial communication (www.jsmc.uni-jena.de). JSMC is an ambitious Graduate School prospectively comprising 150 PhD students who will be educated in a structured, interdisciplinary training program based on top-level fundamental research. Four faculties of the Friedrich Schiller University Jena, six non-university research institutions as well as twelve partner companies are participating in this cutting edge research and training program which includes an innovative PhD program, career development and intensive sociocultural care. Three embedded existing Research Training Groups as well as twelve other cooperative research projects are engaged to incorporate novel research areas to achieve a complete view of microbial communication.
We invite applications for 9 PhD Fellowships
The positions are immediately available.
We expect:
- a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Natural or Life Sciences. Research at JSMC is centred around “Microbial Communication” from various scientific perspectives (including Biology, Physics, Earth Science, Chemistry, Medical Sciences, Bioinformatics, etc.). Candidates about to earn their degree are welcome to apply.
- high motivation and interest to join one of the interdisciplinary research areas of JSMC
- creativity and interest to shape your own thesis project
- an integrative and cooperative personality
- very good communication skills in English

Consumption of inexpensive medicines increased risks for resistance development and environmental effects?
Pharmaceuticals are thought to reach the aquatic environment primarily via sewage effluents, where for example estrogens can feminize fish. Low levels of antibiotics in normal treated sewage effluents are not believed affect microorganisms. However, we recently showed that treated effluent from 90 production sites in India contains extremely high, toxic levels of antibiotics, with ciprofloxacin up to 1 million times the levels normally found in sewage effluents. We will start to address the environmental impact of the release of pharmaceuticals at this centre for the global bulk-drug market. This will also include the impact on species diversity and resistance development of bacterial communities. The project will also address different possibilities of how the situation can be improved. We believe the project will provide new knowledge on antibiotic pollution and the subsequent development of resistance, of urgent importance for improving regulatory standards for production units world-wide. The project will be performed in collaboration with several other research groups, both in Sweden and India.
The project is part of the multidisciplinary graduate school Miljö och Hälsa (Environment and Health) coordinated by Centre for Environment and Sustainability at University of Gothenburg and Chalmers University of Technology.
