Institute of Biogeochemistry and Pollutant Dynamics, ETH Zentrum
ETH Zurich
PhD research project in the Soil Chemistry Group, Institute of Biogeochemistry and Pollutant Dynamics at ETH Zurich.
Supervisors: Dr. Christian Mikutta and Prof. Ruben Kretzschmar
We are inviting applications for two PhD student positions in the area of environmental soil chemistry and biogeochemistry of trace elements. The project addresses the binding of Arsenic to natural organic matter of peatlands. The first PhD student will investigate the speciation and potential bioavailability of As in an As-contaminated peatland and explore the temporal and spatial dynamics of As in the pore water. The second PhD student will study the binding strength, mechanisms, kinetics, and abiotic controls of the interaction between different As species and natural organic matter. Both sub-projects include the setup of laboratory-scale experiments and the use of advanced analytical techniques for the quantification and speciation of trace elements in the solid and liquid phase.

The Life Science Zurich Graduate School houses several Ph.D. programs that cover distinct areas of the life sciences. Each program offers research and education opportunities in a stimulating international environment for ambitious students who wish to work towards a Ph.D. degree. Accepted students perform their research project in one of the participating research groups of their favorite program, according to their scientific interest. Advanced teaching and training courses are offered throughout the curriculum. The program language is English throughout.
Applicants must hold or anticipate receiving a Masters degree or equivalent from a university in a relevant field before starting the Ph.D. program. Applicants accepted for the program will have to register with either the University of Zurich or ETH Zurich, depending on the affiliation of their future research group.
Ph.D. studies usually last 3-4 years

The Seminar for Applied Mathematics of ETH Zürich has an open position to be filled with a PhD student pursuing research in numerical linear algebra and scientific computing. Available thesis topics include the analysis and parallelization of numerical algorithms for solving large-scale dense eigenvalue problems, and the development of novel eigenvalue solvers for matrices having hierarchical or tensor product structure.
The position is temporary and limited to 3-4 years after a three month period of probation. Their holders will be regular ETH research staff. The position will involve teaching of tutorial lectures, supervision of undergraduate students, and grading of examinations equivalent to a workload of about 10h/week.
Candidates must have a master or diploma degree in mathematics or computer science. They should have a strong background in numerical analysis and linear algebra, in particular the theory and numerical treatment of eigenvalue problems. Experience in computer implementation of numerical algorithms and interest in parallel computing is necessary. ETH Zuerich specifically encourages female candidates to apply.

Post-doctoral positions are available from January 1st 2008 (or upon agreement) in our laboratory at the Institute of Biochemistry, ETH in Zurich. We are looking for highly motivated scientists with a strong background in cellular and molecular biology. We offer a friendly, enthusiastic and interactive environment. Our staff is international and the working language is English.
Our group is interested in the functional characterization of Telomeric Repeat containing RNA (TERRA), a recently discovered component of mammalian telomeres (for more information please visit: http://www.bc.biol.ethz.ch/box_feeder/people/groups/azzalin/). Possible research topics include TERRA regulation during cancer development or cellular senescence and the discovery and characterization of novel TERRA regulators. We will exploit combinations of genetic, cell biological and biochemical approaches available in mammalian cell cultures.

PhD Positions (Azzalin lab)
Graduate student positions are available from January 1st 2008 (or upon agreement) in our laboratory at the Institute of Biochemistry, ETH in Zurich. The project aims to elucidate the function of Telomeric Repeat containing RNA (TERRA) at chromosome ends in mammalian cells (for more information please visit: http://www.bc.biol.ethz.ch/box_feeder/people/groups/azzalin/). We will exploit combinations of genetic, cell-biological and biochemical tools available in mammalian cell cultures to reveal possible TERRA-associated roles in telomere length maintenance, cancer etiology and cellular senescence.

PhD position at ETH Zurich, Institute of Computational
Science, in collaboration with the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI), Large Research Facilities Division
A PhD positioned is offered in the context of a 3-year Swiss NSF research grant. The goal of the project is the development of a large-scale finite element code for the simulation of resonant lossy electromagnetic structures (antennas, waveguides). This is the continuation of a project in which a code was developed for the design of particle accelerator cavities.
Applicants should have a university degree in Computational Science, Mathematics, Physics, or Electrical Engineering with strong programming skills (C++). Previous exposure to computational electrodynamics and the finite element method would be beneficial.

“High-performance computing in global and earthquake seismology: linking innovative Earth tomography to earthquake physics and seismic hazard”
We are seeking two highly motivated students to work within a recently funded 3-year research project in the domain of computational seismology. The aim of this project is to apply modern high-performance computing techniques to imaging of seismic sources and Earth structure, both from a forward modeling perspective and from the inverse problem.
These two topics are tightly coupled since
(i) they involve the same technical and computational issues, representing different applications of the same key computational tools and because
(ii) the source and structural imaging problems are strictly related: seismic observations cannot provide a faithful image of Earth structure unless the location and mechanism of the sources are well known, while in turn the accuracy with which source parameters are determined depends on the quality of the three-dimensional Earth model used as reference in earthquake source inversions.

The successful candidates will study regional-scale seismic tomography, including its implications for geodynamics, applied to Europe and the mediterranean basin. This research project emphasizes application of innovative techniques in seismology, including finite-frequency (”banana-doughnut”) tomography, and interferometric analysis of seismic ambient noise. Advisors will be Prof. Eduard Kissling and Dr. Lapo Boschi, in collaboration with Dr. Alberto Michelini (INGV Roma, Italy).
Our institute is a diverse environment emphasizing multidisciplinary interactions. A wide variety of graduate level courses in the Earth Sciences are offered. Please visit the Seismology and Geodynamics web page, at http://www.seg.ethz.ch/ or contact Dr. L. Boschi (larryboschi@gmail.com) for further information.
