Netherlands - Erasmus Medical Center PhD Studentship in Neuroscience

A 4-year position for a graduate student is available in the Auditory Periphery Lab. In this project, the processing of low-frequency sounds by the inner ear is studied through the neural response they evoke. To this end, a tailored acoustic stimulus is used that allows an accurate quantitative analysis of the mechanical processing preceding the neural stage (J. Neurosci, 2006, 26:11462-73).

The PhD student will record from single auditory nerve fibers of the Mongolian gerbils and, in a later stage, of the Leopard frog. The setup for neural recordings from the gerbil is operational. Recordings from the frog will be performed at UCLA, California, during a 4-month collaboration project with Dr. P. Narins. The PhD student will participate in the Auditory Periphery group http://beta.neuro.nl/research/vanderheijden.

Netherlands - Erasmus University Rotterdam PhD Positions in Business Management

PhD Positions at Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University
Application deadline: April 1, 2008

We are looking for excellent candidates for the PhD project: Intelligent Trading Agents that Facilitate Decision Making in Multi-Agent Marketplaces using Preference Modeling.

PhD supervisors: Eric van Heck, Wolf Ketter

Abstract: Modern business networks and markets are highly dynamic and exhibit a high degree of uncertainty. Under these conditions business managers are routinely faced with complex strategic, tactical, and operational decisions; decisions ranging from the macroscopic (i.e. which markets should we enter and when?) to the microscopic (i.e. which products should be packed on which pallet?). Also customers are faced with multi attribute decisions, such as from whom can I book a travel under certain constraints (money, time, quality, etc)? Within this project we investigate how learning agents may be designed to support humans in these decision making processes. We define learning agents as software entities that carry out some set of operations on behalf of a user or another program with some degree of independence or autonomy, improve their performance from experience and in so doing employ some knowledge or representation of the user’s goals or needs.

Erasmus MC
PhD Studentship
Molecular Biology and Genetics

Department of Forensic Molecular Biology

A 4 year PhD student position in molecular biology and genetics is available in the Department of Forensic Molecular Biology, Erasmus University Medical Center, Rotterdam, The Netherlands.

The general area of research is in identifying and understanding human individual and population differences (geographic origin, visible / physical traits, evolutionary genetic adaptation) for fundamental biological interest but also for potential future application to forensics. We are using state-of-art D/RNA including genome-wide technologies to identify respective regions / markers including dedicated follow-up studies. A suitable applicant will hold a M.Sc. in molecular biology or molecular genetics. Exceptional B.Sc. students are also encouraged to apply.

Netherlands - 2008 Netherlands Fellowship Programmes (NFP) (administered by Nuffic)

The Netherlands Fellowship Programmes (NFP) are demand-driven fellowship programmes designed to foster capacity building within organizations in 57 countries in development by providing training and education to their mid-career staff members. The NFP are funded by the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs from the budget for development cooperation.

The need for education and training must occur within the organization of the applicant. This means that applicants must be nominated by their employers. In fact, applications without the support of an employer will not be considered.

Nuffic (the Netherlands Organization for International Cooperation in Higher Education) administers the NFP on behalf of the Minister for Development Cooperation. The Minister determines the policy that governs the framework of the NFP programme. Nuffic manages and monitors the programmes as a whole. The Dutch organizations selected to provide the required education and training are responsible for awarding and administering the fellowships.
