Division of Engineering
King’s College London
The Centre for Digital Signal Processing in the Division of Engineering, King’s College London, invites applications for PhD students to pursue research in the field of perceptual sound field reconstruction/emulation. The goal of this project is to develop a new technology for multi-channel consumer audio which would significantly improve over existing techniques in terms of realism, the accuracy and stability of the auditory perspective, the size of the sweet listening spot and the persuasiveness of the envelopment experience. Further details about the project can be found at www.kcl.ac.uk/schools/pse/diveng/research/cdspr/zor/
This project is funded by EPSRC and includes provision for collaboration between the Centre for Digital Signal Processing at
King’s College London and the Institute of Sound Recording, University of Surrey. There is one full PhD studentship available which provides for UK/EU fees and additional funding of around £1,200 per month for living expenses for 36 months.
The ideal candidate will possess an MSc in electrical engineering or another relevant area. Knowledge of advanced signal processing techniques and experience with sound field analysis and/or multi-channel audio technologies are essential for effective pursuance of the project.
The studentship is available immediately.

Applications are invited for a 3.5 year PhD scholarship, funded by an EPSRC Mathematics CASE award in conjunction with Simul8.
The aim of this research is to apply new methods from multivariate statistics and decision theory to support analysis of parameter uncertainty and parameter quantification in Discrete Event Simulation (DES). DES is concerned with developing complex stochastic models and obtaining inference on the influence that several input parameters have on specified performance measures through Monte Carlo simulation. Specifically this project will investigate the use of Empirical Bayesian methods which can use data from existing simulation runs at different input parameter settings to estimate the variability of output measures as input parameter settings are changed.
The department of Management Science is an energetic research active department with interests that cover a wide spectrum of interdisciplinary applied operational research. Information on the department can be found at www.managementscience.org
Information about Simul8 can be found at www.simul8.com
Applicants should be UK residents with a 1st or upper 2nd class degree in a quantitative subject area. A masters degree in Operational Research / Management Science/Statistics would be an advantage, but is not essential.

Masters Studentships (MSc)
Medical Engineering
Centre for Medical Engineering and Technology
EPSRC Studentships
The taught Master of Science (MSc) in Medical Engineering is a specialist programme that involves the Centre for Medical Engineering and Technology (CMET) at the University of Hull, the Hull-York Medical School and the local NHS Hospital Trust.
The aim of the MSc is to provide graduates with the skills necessary to work in the rapidly expanding medical devices industry. It combines training and courses in the latest computer modelling techniques, biomaterials and medical devices, together with product innovation techniques and knowledge of medical device standards and regulatory matters, all put into practice through a medical devices project.
Successful applicants will normally hold a second class degree in an engineering or related discipline, or possibly a relevant life sciences or clinical degree. However, less well qualified applicants with relevant industrial experience may be considered.

We invite applications for a postgraduate studentship in modelling dislocation ladders in fatigue, funded by EPSRC, to work as part of the 5-year Critical Mass programme (which began in 2006) in “New Frontiers in the Mathematics of Solids” (OxMOS). The studentship will be supervised by Prof Jon Chapman (from the Oxford Centre for Industrial and Applied Mathematics) and will be based at the Mathematical Institute, but will also have regular contact with Prof John Ball (from the Applied Analysis and Mechanics Group), and Prof Endre Suli (from the Numerical Analysis Group).
Local mismatches in the atomic structure of a crystalline material are known as dislocations, and act as line sources of stress. Dislocations move around in a material in response to stress, and may become tangled (this is the basis of the work-hardening of metals). Under cyclic loading of a material such as copper it is observed that “ladders” of dislocations form with a characteristic spacing between regions of high dislocation density (the rungs of the ladders) and regions of near pristine material (the gaps in between). It is thought that these ladders play an important role in the fatigue of the material, but at present there is no mathematical theory which can predict the formation or characteristic scale of these remarkably regular structures.

Community Resilience To Extreme Weather Events Through Improved Local Decision Making
Research Centre for the Built and Human Environment / School of the Built Environment
Applications are invited for a PhD research studentship at the Research Institute of the Built and Human Environment, School of the Built Environment University of Salford.
This project offers an exciting opportunity to work in the 6* RAE rated research institute of the Built and Human Environment. The 3 year doctoral studentship (funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council - EPRSC) will provide a maintenance grant and cover all approved tuition fees.
The research will focus on the coping strategies of small and medium scale enterprises (SMEs) in responding to extreme weather events. This will involve literature reviews, surveys, case studies and contributing to action research studies with SMEs to understand the characteristics of SME coping strategies, their adaptive capacities, resilience, barriers in implementing various coping measures etc., The PhD research student will be working in close collaboration with research fellows, research assistants and other PhD students from various universities. The 3-year research project has several interim and final deliverables, with critical milestone activities to be achieved in the interim. The three-year project will commence in February 2008.

Providing Communication in Infrastructureless Environments: Disruption Tolerant Networking
School of Computer Science, University of Nottingham
Applications are invited for a three-year, full-time, fully-funded EPSRC PhD Studentship to investigate “A Novel Routing Protocol for Large Scale Disconnected Environments”. The project aims to explore how wireless mobile protocols can support a very large number of users in establishing and maintaining communication in environments with little or no existing network infrastructure e.g. areas affected by disasters such as the Tsunami. We will develop a novel optimised routing protocol for providing ubiquitous connectivity to a large number of users and devices at manageable cost in the face of frequently disconnected infrastructure.
We will do this by combining scaleable mobile ad hoc routing approaches and delay tolerant network routing approaches. This research will involve developing the protocol through modelling and simulation.
