PhD positions at the Centre Européen de Calcul Atomique et Moléculaire Headquarters - Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL)
Starting February 2009, a few positions will become available at the European Center for Atomic and Molecular Calculations (CECAM) headquarters (EPF-Lausanne) for PhD students to perform research in a
domain of computational sciences. Main topics will be computational materials science for alternative energies and environment, methodologies for structure-based drug design, multi-scale simulations. Close collaboration within EPFL as well as with other academic institutions and industrial research groups in Europe is envisaged.
CECAM organizes several tutorials in computational methods every year, which the students will be encouraged to follow. Moreover they will benefit from the stimulating environment provided by CECAM, thanks to the numerous international workshops on computational science topics, taking place at the headquarters and attended by worldwide experts.

The Laboratory of Environmental Chemistry at EPFL (http://lce.epfl.ch) is interested in naturally occurring processes in surface water that can lead to the inactivation of viral pathogens. Some of the most effective water treatment methods (e.g., waste stabilization ponds) rely on such natural disinfection processes. Even though these treatment methods are extensively used, little is known about the factors that control virus inactivation.
We are currently looking for a PhD student to carry out a thesis in the area of virus-particle interactions and their effect on virus disinfection. In particular, we are interested in understanding how electrostatic forces or radicals produced from photo-active particles affect virus viability. For this project, we will use a combination of analytical and photochemical techniques, as well as molecular biological methods. Our long-term goal is to use the knowledge gained from our research to improve existing water treatment systems, and develop novel, more effective methods at a low cost.
Institution: EPFL is a top-tier European research institution located in the French-speaking part of Switzerland. The campus is beautifully situated at the shore of Lake Geneva, with a full view of the Alps.

The Laboratory of Nanostrucrures and Novel Electronic Materials at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, EPFL) invites applications for a Ph.D. position in experimental solid state physics. The successful candidate will use electrical transport measurements (resistivity, Hall-effect and thermopower) under high pressure to study novel electronic materials like high temperature superconductors, manganites, vanadates etc. Further information on the laboratory can be obtained at http://nanotubes.epfl.ch.
Requirements
An M.S. or M.A. in physics is required. Preference will be given to candidates with a strong undergraduate background condensed matter physics and experience in laboratory work. Since the language used at the doctoral school of EPFL is English, applicants whose first language is not English should demonstrate their English proficiency. Working knowledge of French is an advantage.
The appointment is for up to four years during which a Ph.D. thesis must be completed. The Ph.D. stipend is SFr. 50,000 per year. More information about the doctoral program at EPFL can be found at: http://phd.epfl.ch/page55518.html

The Theoretical Physical Chemistry Group at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, EPFL) invites applications for a Ph.D. position in theoretical chemistry and chemical physics. The preferred start date is between January and August 2008.
The successful candidate will use quantum-mechanical and semiclassical methods to explain physicochemical properties of molecules, such as, nuclear quantum effects on reaction rate constants, quantum effects in atomic and molecular clusters at low temperatures as well as decoherence in mesoscopic systems. Our group is also interested in using classical statistical physics to predict interactions between biological macromolecules, e.g., in order to find genes regulated by microRNAs.
