Studentship for ecological modelling, leading to a PhD in European universities (Cod. 017_PDP_ECME)
The Edmund Mach Foundation (FEM) was established in 2007 jointly by the Autonomous Province of Trento and the Agricultural Institute at San Michele all’Adige (IASMA). FEM will carry forward and expand the mission of IASMA (established in 1874) of sustaining Trentino’s land-based economy through experimentation, education and technological transfer (advisory service). Additionally, the FEM is now establishing a Research and Innovation Centre that aims at playing an international leading role in research and innovation in three main research areas:
A1) Genomics and Molecular Breeding of Fruit Crops.
A2) Food Quality and Natural Products Biotechnologies.
A3) Biodiversity and Biocomplexity of Alpine and Mountain Ecosystems.
The Foundation carries out research project funded by the Province of Trento like the ENRIVOCHANGE project (Global change and sustainable management of agriculture in highly developed mountain environment). The graduated student will work on cataloguing and development of ecological models for the main pathogen and parasites and quality of crops. In particular collecting existing models and historical data and integration in the system called ENVIRO.

Every year, with the support of the Belgian Directorate-General for Development Cooperation (DGDC), VLIR-UOS awards scholarships to students from developing countries to study one of the 15 International Course Programmes (ICPs) or one of the 6 International Training Programmes (ITPs). The ICPs and ITPs target people from the South with a responsible position in civil society (at a university, school, NGO, ministry, etc).
Each year there are a maximum of 180 scholarships available for first-year ICP students and a maximum of 70 scholarships for ITP participants.
Training Programmes (ITP)
ITPs are short-term training programmes whose main focus is transferring skills rather than knowledge. The International Training Programmes are designed for people from developing countries with a certain degree of professional experience.
The ITPs aim at transferring knowledge and skills, and create the possibility for cooperation and networking.

The NIOZ Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research is an independent research institute associated with the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research.
NIOZ was founded in 1876 and is one of the oldest major oceanographic institutions in Europe. Its mission is to pursue curiosity-driven multidisciplinary marine research in coastal and shelf seas as well as in the open ocean through close co-operation between physicists, chemists, geologists and biologists.
Within the national NWO project “Changing carrying capacity in Dutch marine waters” (ZKO Monitoring), a 5-year research program on the “Structure and Functioning of the Wadden Sea fish assemblage” is funded in which the Department of Marine Ecology (MEE; Dr. ir. H.W. van der Veer) collaborates with the Institute for Marine Resources and Ecosystem Studies, Wageningen IMARES (Prof. dr. Adriaan D. Rijnsdorp).
Within this project we have a vacancy for a PhD student (m/f)
Project description
The project is build on a monitoring programme employing standardized sampling methods (bottom trawls) of the fish fauna in the western Wadden Sea covering both sub-tidal and inter-tidal habitats, whereby biological samples are collected to estimate present trophic relationships, food consumption, growth, mortality and for comparison with historical monitoring programmes (1960-ties and 1980-ties). Surveys will be combined with underwater audiovisual observations with the aim to apply landscape ecological methods and to arrive at predictive models for the presence, distribution and structure of fish communities. The PhD will function in a team and is expected to participate in data collection, data processing of past and newly acquired data, as well as to write scientific papers on the results of his/her work.

I have one 2-year MS assistantship available for a student interested in the social and economic aspects of natural resource management and alternative energy systems. Location: Department of Natural Resource Ecology & Management. You would become one of the founding members of the NREM Socio-Economic Research Lab. Ideal students will have an interest in sociology, economics, and ecology.
The research involved is in the realm of sustainable biomass systems for biofuel/bioproduct production. Key research questions involve: What biomass fuel sources most effectively supply jointly produced economic, social, and environmental benefits (while minimizing potential negative impacts) in the US Cornbelt? What new crops, cropping systems, forest management practices, machinery and techniques for harvesting, storing, and transporting biomass are required for its sustainable development? What ecosystem goods and services can be qualified and then quantified within a partially perennialized agricultural landscape as compared to traditional row-crop systems.
Research flexibility is always provided for the development of student-interest research questions. Research will involve systems modeling, stakeholder based assessments and interdisciplinary perspectives. Quantitative aptitude and reasonably developed verbal and written skills are a distinct plus. The student will be expected to present results of his/her research at regional and national meetings and to prepare manuscripts of these findings for publication in the peer-reviewed literature.

POSITION AS DOCTORAL RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP (PhD stipendiat) in Evolutionary Ecology
available at the Department of Biology, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Oslo, Norway.
The position is available for a period of four years with 25% compulsory work, starting 1st August 2008 (the actual start date is negotiable).
We seek to employ a motivated PhD candidate in a project on life-history variation and climate change. The project addresses general questions about the effects of climate change and variation on ectotherms in alpine environments. Specifically, the project will focus on carabid beetles, where distinct patterns of life-history variation along climate gradients have been documented. These patterns probably reflect trade-offs between developmental time and fecundity/adult size when development rate is constrained by temperature and season length. However, little is known about to what degree this variation is due to phenotypic plasticity or genetic variation, how the patterns compare among species and habitats, how evolvable the life-history traits are and how populations may respond to climate change. We welcome any applicant with some background in ecology or evolution.
The purpose of the fellowship is research training leading to the successful completion of a PhD degree. 75% of the working time is allocated to the candidate’s own research and the PhD program, and 25% is allocated to academic duties which typically include lecturing and co-supervision of master students.

PostDoctoral Fellowship in Horizontal Gene Transfer in Microbial Biofilms
The RaMAda project (Rapid Microbial Adaptation via Horizontal Gene Transfer) aims to predict and quantify the incidence of extant horizontal gene transfer (HGT) in microbial biofilm communities.
Apply before: 31.08.2007 at 12:00 (noon)
The RaMAda project (Rapid Microbial Adaptation via Horizontal Gene Transfer) aims to predict and quantify the incidence of extant horizontal gene transfer (HGT) in microbial biofilm communities. HGT may play an important role in the adaptive behavior of microbial ecosystems. This project has both an experimental and numerical-computational element. Molecular biomarkers and confocal scanning laser microscopy are employed for single-cell resolved detection of microbial growth and gene transfer dynamics. Experimentation is conducted in parallel with the development of an Individual-based (Ib) model of microbial biofilms that incorporates a description of gene transfer dynamics.
The candidates will join the RaMAda team to lead the experimental phase of this project: Candidates will work on one or more of the following project elements; in situ inspection of microbial biofilms via advanced microscopy, micrographic image analysis, examination of cell growth, motility, and gene transfer dynamics via bioreporter constructs; biokinetic analysis of microbial growth and gene transfer dynamics; quantification of gene dosage and gene expression via qPCR techniques.
