2007 COMPETITION ANNOUNCEMENT
The United States-South Pacific Scholarship Program, authorized by the U.S. Congress and funded by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State, is a competitive, merit-based scholarship program that provides opportunities for degree study at U.S. institutions of higher education. The scholarship program will include a summer internship in Washington, D.C. as well as a four to five week community service project in the student’s home country.
Candidates from the following countries, who meet specific selection criteria, are eligible for the program: Cook Islands, Fiji, Kiribati, Niue, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu, and Vanuatu. The U.S.-South Pacific Scholarship Program is administered by the East-West Center on behalf of the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.
Eligible fields of Study
Standard liberal arts curriculum and other selected fields, with priority given to agriculture, business administration, economics, education, environmental studies, information technology & management, journalism, political science, public administration, and related fields. If a proposed field of study within the liberal arts is not among the priority fields, the applicant should give special attention to explaining how this course of study would support the goals of the program. Support is not available for professional degrees such as medicine (M.D.) or law (J.D.).
Up to five (5) scholarships will be available for studies to begin in August 2008.

The East-West Center Graduate Degree Fellowship provides Master’s and Doctoral funding for graduate students from Asia, the Pacific, and the U.S. to participate in educational and research programs at the East-West Center while pursuing graduate study at the University of Hawai‘i. Through East-West Center affiliation, awardees become part of a growing network of students and alumni forging the shape and substance of the world’s most vibrant region.
Center fellowships are provided for degree study at the University of Hawai‘i and participation in the Center’s international and intercultural programs. The Center and the University of Hawai‘i, located in a unique island setting with a distinctive multicultural heritage, offer premier resources for studies on Asia, the Pacific, and the U.S.
Degree fellows have opportunities to participate in graduate certificate programs offered in leadership studies, international intercultural studies, population studies and natural resource management that enhance their degree studies. Other opportunities include invited participation in the Center’s research projects in several areas of international study including politics, governance and security; economics; environmental change; population and health; education; and Pacific islands development.

Asia Pacific Leadership Program adalah program sertifikat yang dirancang untuk memenuhi kebutuhan baru di bidang pendidikan dan sumber daya manusia dalam periode dimana saling ketergantungan di wilayah Asia Pasifik semakin meningkat. Program ini akan menciptakan jaringan pemimpin dari Amerika Serikat, Asia, dan wilayah Pasifik yang mengenal isu dan budaya di wilayahnya dan terlatih dalam kepemimpinan untuk kesejahteraan negara-negara dan rakyat di wilayahnya. Program ini telah terbentuk melalui dukungan dana dari Freeman Foundation.
Program ini mencari para profesional muda dan mahasiswa terkemuka dari Amerika Serikat dan negara-negara di wilayah Asia Pasifik. Bagi mahasiswa pascasarjana, program ini melengkapi studi di program pendidikan pascasarjana yang ditempuh di negara mereka masing-masing dengan mempertemukan mereka dengan rekan-rekan dan pengajar dari wilayah Asia Pasifik yang tidak akan mereka temukan di negaranya sendiri. Program ini terutama bertujuan untuk melibatkan para mahasiswa pascasarjana yang akan menerima gelarnya dari lembaga pendidikan tinggi di wilayah Asia Pasifik yang mungkin tidak akan memperoleh kesempatan untuk datang ke Amerika Serikat di luar program ini. Lulusan program ini akan memiliki perspektif wilayah yang luas, pengetahuan mengenai masyarakat dan isu-isu yang berkembang di wilayahnya, dan terlatih untuk mengimplementasikan kepemimpinan dan meningkatkan kerjasama. Diharapkan para lulusan akan mencari atau kembali ke posisi-posisi di bidang usaha, pemerintahan, lembaga-lembaga swadaya masyarakat dan lembaga-lembaga pendidikan tinggi.
