United Kingdom - Cranfield University PhD Studentships in Aerodynamics

The requirement for improved efficiency and reduced environmental impact is continually driving civil aero-engine designers to consider both novel propulsion systems as well as airframe architectures. The success of these proposals relies on a clear understanding of the complex aerodynamics associated with the integration of the propulsion and airframe systems. Funded PhD studentships are available for aerodynamic research in the areas of propeller aerodynamics, intake design, vortical flows and aircraft aerodynamics. The research will be conducted using experimental, computational and analytical methods and will utilise the Cranfield University Large-Scale Low-Speed Wind Tunnel as well as sophisticated Particle Image Velocimetry methods. The research will offer the opportunity to work with industry in this field and will enable individuals to be well prepared for a rewarding career after successful completion of the PhD.

Entry requirements
Applicants for the post should have EU residence status and must have a first-class or upper second-class degree in engineering or a related area. Fully funded studentships are only available to applicants with UK residence status. An aerospace background would be a distinct advantage as would practical experience of experimental and computational aerodynamics.

Funding
A range of good funding arrangements is available for the majority of these opportunities.

United Kingdom - 2008 Cranfield University PhD Studentship in Distributed Leadership in Programme Management

PhD Studentship
Distributed leadership in programme management
International Centre for Programme Management

Cranfield School of Management - one of Europe’s top management schools - is offering this PhD studentship within its International Centre for Programme Management, a world-leading hub for research into this important emerging discipline. The studentship is tenable for four years from October 2008.

In business and government, programmes are used to transform strategies and policies into desired outcomes and benefits. Programmes usually consist of multiple related projects. The concept of the project manager as a single point of integrative project leadership and responsibility is widely accepted as a fundamental principle of good practice. Now, professional guidelines in the emerging discipline of programme management advocate a similar single, integrative leadership status for the role of the programme manager. In practice, however, the leadership of programmes is inevitably distributed or shared among a changing group of individuals. The collective nature of programme leadership has important consequences for the behaviours and mindsets of individuals and for the governance structures within which they operate. There is a significant opportunity and need for the creation of new knowledge in this domain, and the development of new theories based on empirical evidence.

UK - Cranfield University MSc Studentship in Consumer Attitudes to Water Conservation Measures

MSc by Research Studentship; Cross-cultural analysis of consumer attitudes to water conservation measures

Bursary of up to £17,000 plus fees available. Conditions apply*

Academic Supervisor:
Dr Paul Jeffrey, Centre for Water Science, Sustainable Systems Department

An opportunity has arisen for a high calibre graduate to undertake an MSc by Research in consumer attitudes to water conservation measures.

Awareness of water conservation issues continues to grow with increasing demands placed on water resources. Attitudes to water conservation measures are important influences on individual willingness to take action. Many of these attitudes are culturally based. With progressively heterogeneous societies, an understanding of the relationships between attitudes to water as a resource and commodity and possible responses to conservation initiatives is becoming increasingly important.

This research activity will entail a review of theory and existing empirical studies on these issues, application of statistical analysis techniques to data from questionnaire based surveys conducted in four countries in the Middle East. Preparation of reports and papers to support the project will also be required.

UK - Cranfield University MSc by Research Studentship in Sheet Feeding Industry Production Planning

Funding: A bursary of up to £17,000 plus fees available. Conditions apply*
Supported by Abbey Corrugated Limited

Academic Supervisor:
Dr Essam Shehab, Decision Engineering Centre, Manufacturing Department

A fully funded MSc by Research studentship investigating the production planning process within the sheet feeding industry is currently available.

Abbey Corrugated and Cranfield University are undertaking this collaborative research project following the success of a previous MSc research project, which involved the development of a Full Pallet System for the sheet feeding industry. This project extends this research and aims to establish the optimum board stack height for each board flute to enable the maximum percentage fill on the delivery vehicles. This will require research into the shop floor; including discussions with transport and sales. Additionally one of the objectives of the MSc by research project is to understand and apply the outcome of the previous research project at one of the Abbey Corrugated sites.

Abbey Corrugated, part of the Packaging Division of the DS Smith Plc group of companies, is the leading sheet feeder in the UK, and has been operating in the UK for over 30 years.

UK - Cranfield University PhD Studentship in Water Supply and Sanitation Scheme

PhD studentship: Evaluation of knowledge networks within and between water supply and sanitation schemes in developing countries

Bursary of up to £17,000 p.a. for 3 years plus fees available. Conditions apply*

Academic Supervisor:
Dr Paul Jeffrey, Centre for Water Science, Sustainable Systems Department

Understanding the constraints and opportunities that different water supply and sanitation (WSS) schemes face, both from indigenous and exogenous sources, may help isolate where knowledge gaps lie and how contrasts between WSS projects can be bridged. In particular, the project seeks to develop innovative knowledge management tools to support WSS schemes and so generate accessible, relevant and timely resource solutions in light of the Millennium Development Goals.

Areas which may form a thesis include: exploring stakeholder receptivity to new WSS technologies in developing countries; determining how knowledge hubs evolve and coexist; and interdisciplinary approaches to the development of learning spaces and innovative knowledge management tools. The successful applicant will take responsibility for: reviewing WSS schemes and developing a criteria of performance indicators; creating an analytical framework to assess these indicators; undertaking qualitative fieldwork and; the preparation of reports and papers to support the project.
