The research group “Numerical Methods for high-dimensional Systems” at the Mathematical Department of Universitaet Karlsruhe (TH) invites applications for a full PhD position (BAT IIa / E13) in numerical analysis or scientific computing.
Candidates must have graduated in mathematics, physics, bioinformatics or computer science. The position requires sound understanding of numerical mathematics, in particular a good knowledge of numerical methods for partial and ordinary differential equations. The candidate must be familiar with MATLAB and C++ or Java. German language skills are not necessary provided that the candidate has a sufficient level of written and spoken English.

We seek applications for a research scholarship:
- MPhil-PhD in a suitable aspect of Computing
The scholarships are for award to outstanding UK/EU/Overseas applicants and are intended to commence in the 2008/2009 academic year.
The scholarships have an annual bursary of £15,000 for the 2008/2009 academic year, and fee-settlement of the relevant annual tuition fee. They are to be offered only to new full-time research students. In the first instance they are offered for one year only, but subject to satisfactory annual progress, are renewable for each of a further two academic years.
You will need a distinctive and related Master’s degree, supported by relevant practical experience and a high standard of both spoken and written English. Applications are sought from all eligible applicants, in particular, those who obtained their Master’s degree from the Faculty of Business, Computing & Information Management of London South Bank University.

The Seminar for Applied Mathematics of ETH Zürich has an open position to be filled with a PhD student pursuing research in numerical linear algebra and scientific computing. Available thesis topics include the analysis and parallelization of numerical algorithms for solving large-scale dense eigenvalue problems, and the development of novel eigenvalue solvers for matrices having hierarchical or tensor product structure.
The position is temporary and limited to 3-4 years after a three month period of probation. Their holders will be regular ETH research staff. The position will involve teaching of tutorial lectures, supervision of undergraduate students, and grading of examinations equivalent to a workload of about 10h/week.
Candidates must have a master or diploma degree in mathematics or computer science. They should have a strong background in numerical analysis and linear algebra, in particular the theory and numerical treatment of eigenvalue problems. Experience in computer implementation of numerical algorithms and interest in parallel computing is necessary. ETH Zuerich specifically encourages female candidates to apply.

At the Department of Informatics a position as research fellow (PhD position) is open for 3 years in the «ParComb» project. The project is aimed at designing parallel algorithms for combinatorial problems in scientific computing. The type of problems studied includes, among others, different kinds of colouring and matching problems motivated from applications in scientific computing. The successful candidate will cooperate in developing and implementing working codes that can be used in applied research.
