PhD Studentship in Computer Vision for location based services
sponsored by HPLabs Innovation Research Award
Department of Computer Science
The successful candidate will join the Computer Vision Group at the Department of Computer Science, where we have developed a number of real-time visual location and mapping systems that we have applied to augmented reality and robotics. The University of Bristol is one of the very best universities in the UK and Computer Science one of its most successful departments. The selected student will also be eligible to apply for the regular HPLabs internships.
There are no restrictions on nationality as the scholarship can cover overseas university fees and includes a stipend for living expenses. Funding is provided by HP on a yearly basis subject to satisfactory performance for up to three years.
We are looking for the finest candidate from anywhere in the world to join our research team and invite interested students with a good MSc or undergraduate degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics or equivalent to apply. Applicants should have provable excellent C and/or C++ programming ability (ideally in both Windows and Linux OS), as well as strong mathematical skills. Experience with Computer Vision or related methods is highly desirable and awareness of algorithm design in the context of mobile platforms would be a bonus.

- Masters degree (preferably in Computer Science; Mathematics, Electrical Engineering, and Physics are also accepted)
- Solid programming skills; the projects involve programming in Matlab and C++
- Solid mathematics knowledge (especially linear algebra and statistics)
- Creative and highly motivated
- Fluent in English, both written and spoken
- Prior knowledge in the areas of computer vision, machine learning or data mining is a plus (ideally a master thesis in a related field)
Your profile: (post-doc apoplication)
- PhD in Computer Vision, Machine Learning, or closely related area
- Publications in the top computer vision and/or machine learning conferences and journals
- Highly motivated and willing to work with PhD students

The Colour and Texture Group of the Computer Vision Centre (CVC) at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB, Spain) is offering a 3 years PhD studentship. The work will be within the general framework of Computational Colour Vision and will involve perceptual experiments with human subjects.
The Colour and Texture Group offers a well funded, amicable and very creative environment not far from Barcelona city in Spain. Its main work is related to computational colour and texture representations. We focus on the basis of colour and texture perception in order to automatise the task of labelling the colours and the textures within an image (e.g. automatic image annotation, colour assessment of textured surfaces, illuminant estimation, etc).
The CVC is located inside the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona campus in Bellaterra (beautiful land), some 15 Km (and a 30 min train ride) away from Barcelona city centre. The campus provides a diverse and stimulating scientific environment while the city provides an infinite cultural offer (Barcelona City with its beach and nearly perfect whether is usually voted by travel journalists as one of the most exciting cities in the world and lives up to its reputation).
Salary is around €16,000 gross per year during the first year and around €22,000 gross per year during the last two years. This research grant is funded by the European Union through its CONSOLIDER-INGENIO 2010. The starting date for this position is September 2008.

We wish to appoint a PhD student to conduct research on the next generation of video surveillance systems. The work will be funded by BARCO, a major global manufacturer of video visualisation systems (subject to final contract). The project will address the need for robustness in object classification, tracking and situation assessment for large distributed surveillance applications. In particular it will deal with the investigation and evaluation of multi-camera tracking of heterogeneous objects. You will work in close collaboration with a top industrial R&D department. The project will involve regular travelling to BARCO labs in Belgium.
Applicants must have a first degree (minimum 2i or equivalent) in Computer Science, Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, or related discipline. Previous experience of digital signal processing or computer vision is desirable.
This is a three year studentship (reviewed annually) open to EU and non-EU citizens. The successful applicant will receive an annual stipend of around £12,500 plus normal fees (non-EU citizens will be eligible to receive up to an additional £4,000 p.a. to help them pay the difference between home and overseas fees, so they will be expected to make a personal contribution of £2,000 p.a. towards fees). At the end of the three year period you will be expected to have written the Doctorate thesis.
