Description
The post-doctoral fellowship of the Committee on Global Thought at Columbia University is designed to bring together an innovative group of interdisciplinary researchers from around the world. The Fellowship gives emerging scholars the opportunity to work with distinguished faculty and provide a space for collaborative research and publication. CGT encourages interdisciplinary, transnational research under three broad themes: Secularism and Diversity, Global Governance, and Poverty and Inequality. Past fellows have researched topics including the local socio-economic consequences of global policy, the historical roots of identity, and the evolution of transnational and international political structures. Scholars from any discipline may apply, provided that they successfully indicate how their work will contribute to CGT’s three research themes listed above. Up to four fellowship spots are available for the academic year beginning August 1, 2009.
The term of the fellowship is one calendar year, beginning August 1, 2009 and ending July 31, 2010. The fellowship is renewable for an additional year, contingent upon mutual satisfaction with demonstrated progress.
Requirements
Fellows are expected to:
- Teach or assist with one undergraduate or graduate course, either of their own design or as specified by the Committee. When teaching, fellows are required to hold weekly office hours.
- Participate in planning and execution of research workshops and symposia.
- Present their individual research projects once a semester.
Eligibility
International applicants are encouraged to apply. If selected, Columbia University will sponsor the appropriate visa.

Grant and Application Information for Third Millennium
Foundation Human Rights Fellowships 2007-08
Program Description
The Third Millennium Foundation (TMF) established its Human Rights Fellowships in 2004 in order to support young social entrepreneurs to become human rights leaders. The TMF Human Rights Fellowships provide financial support for one year to recently graduated undergraduate and graduate students to spend six months interning with a NGO in the Global North and six months with an NGO in the Global South. Preference is given to work with a grassroots organization. One of the NGOs should be located in the country where the fellow intends to pursue her/his professional career.
Although they were originally designed to provide support to recently graduated students in the United States and Europe, this focus has now expanded. Beginning in 2007, the TMF Human Rights Fellowships will take a further step toward TMF’s global commitment by soliciting applications from candidates in the Global South in addition to the Global North.
Through the unique design of this program, TMF Human Rights Fellows are not only able to gain valuable experiences in human rights, they are also able to help build the capacity of local, national, and international NGOs. The program builds North-South networks, collaborations, and friendships and provides young leaders frontline experience in human rights advocacy. By relying on solicitations from partner universities throughout the world, the TMF Fellowships further strengthen the relationships between on-the-ground human rights work and academia.
Each Fellowship carries a stipend of US$24,000 for the full year, with the possibility of a supplement for exceptionally high travel or accommodation costs.
Overview of the Program
The TMF Human Rights Fellowships are administered by the Center for the Study of Human Rights (CSHR) at Columbia University. TMF and CSHR work with partner universities in the Global North and Global South to solicit applications. The listing of partner universities will be updated periodically. Applicants not affiliated with a partner university are welcome to apply. Candidates interested in applying should review the application guidelines below and submit their application by email to hrfellowship@tmf-tolerance.org by January 26, 2007.
