The Laboratory of Environmental Chemistry at EPFL (http://lce.epfl.ch) is interested in naturally occurring processes in surface water that can lead to the inactivation of viral pathogens. Some of the most effective water treatment methods (e.g., waste stabilization ponds) rely on such natural disinfection processes. Even though these treatment methods are extensively used, little is known about the factors that control virus inactivation.
We are currently looking for a PhD student to carry out a thesis in the area of virus-particle interactions and their effect on virus disinfection. In particular, we are interested in understanding how electrostatic forces or radicals produced from photo-active particles affect virus viability. For this project, we will use a combination of analytical and photochemical techniques, as well as molecular biological methods. Our long-term goal is to use the knowledge gained from our research to improve existing water treatment systems, and develop novel, more effective methods at a low cost.
Institution: EPFL is a top-tier European research institution located in the French-speaking part of Switzerland. The campus is beautifully situated at the shore of Lake Geneva, with a full view of the Alps.

Institute of Biogeochemistry and Pollutant Dynamics, ETH Zentrum
ETH Zurich
PhD research project in the Soil Chemistry Group, Institute of Biogeochemistry and Pollutant Dynamics at ETH Zurich.
Supervisors: Dr. Christian Mikutta and Prof. Ruben Kretzschmar
We are inviting applications for two PhD student positions in the area of environmental soil chemistry and biogeochemistry of trace elements. The project addresses the binding of Arsenic to natural organic matter of peatlands. The first PhD student will investigate the speciation and potential bioavailability of As in an As-contaminated peatland and explore the temporal and spatial dynamics of As in the pore water. The second PhD student will study the binding strength, mechanisms, kinetics, and abiotic controls of the interaction between different As species and natural organic matter. Both sub-projects include the setup of laboratory-scale experiments and the use of advanced analytical techniques for the quantification and speciation of trace elements in the solid and liquid phase.

PhD Studentship
Polymer Self-Assembly
Department of Chemistry
This studentship is only open to UK nationals and those of equivalent status* (fees paid, plus £12600 per annum stipend) or EU Nationals (fees only, no stipend) due to funding restrictions. The position is commence at a mutually convenient date after 1st October 2008 and will last for 3 years.
The successful applicant should possess a good degree in chemistry, chemical engineering or a related discipline.
The studentship is in the group of Dr Andrew Dove at the University of Warwick (group webpage: www.go.warwick.ac.uk/dovegroup) and will focus on the synthesis and self-assembly of stereoregular block copolymers. You will undertake the synthesis of a range of block copolymers by ring-opening polymerization and controlled radical polymerization methodologies such as RAFT to obtain stereoregular polymers. The effect of both the composition and stereochemistry of the polymers on their ability to selectively self-assemble will be studied.
