The Graduate School offers three fellowships for outstanding students from Africa, per year, enabling them to enroll in one of the Masters programs at the Faculty of Biosciences.
Each fellowship amounts to € 8000 p.a. and can be granted for up to two years to candidates who have a Bachelors degree in Biosciences and who wish to obtain their Masters degree in Molecular Biosciences or Molecular Biotechnology, respectively, in Heidelberg. To apply for one of the fellowships, please, include a separate letter with your application form in which you explain your financial situation.
The fellows are expected to reach the international education standard either within one year of Masters training to compete in the integrated MSc/PhD track, or after two years to compete in the “normal track” for a PhD position offered by the Graduate School.
The Faculty of Biosciences offers Bachelor programs in “Biology (90 places)”, “Molecular Cell Biology (30 places)”, and “Molecular Biotechnology (45 places)”. In 2007, a new Masters program in “Molecular Biosciences” (120 places) was launched, with Majors in “Cancer Biology”, “Developmental Biology”, “Evolution and Ecology”, “Infectious Diseases”, “Molecular and Cellular Biology”, “Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology of Plants”, “Neuroscience” and “Systems Biology”. A Masters program in “Molecular Biotechnology” (30 places), with Majors in “Drug Development”, “Bioinformatics” and “Biophysical Chemistry” has been established in 2004, in collaboration with the Faculties of Biosciences, Mathematics and Chemistry.

A postdoctoral position in single molecule biophysics is available in the Messersmith group at Northwestern University. The overall goals of the research are to elucidate the molecular details of mussel adhesive protein adhesion (for example, see PNAS 2006, 103, 12999). We seek self-motivated individuals interested in a stimulating and interdisciplinary research environment where fundamental biophysics experiments inform the development of biologically inspired materials. For more information on the group please visit our website http://biomaterials.bme.northwestern.edu/index.asp.
Experience in designing, conducting and interpreting single molecule pulling experiments is required. Candidates with experience in AFM single molecule pulling experiments, cantilever tip modification, and peptide or polymer chemistry are especially encouraged to apply. The position is available immediately and will remain open until filled.
One of the top-ranked universities in the country, Northwestern University, combines innovative teaching and pioneering research in a highly collaborative environment that transcends traditional academic boundaries. Northwestern provides students, faculty and staff with exceptional opportunities for intellectual, personal, and professional growth.

PhD Studentship
Biosynthesis in microfluidic devices by manoeuvring magnetic particles
Department of Chemistry
A PhD studentship, funded by the EPSRC, is available within a multi-disciplinary team developing “Lab on a Chip” devices, for example for point-of-care analysis at the patient’s home or scene-of-crime analysis in forensics. The aim of this project is to perform biosynthesis and analytical chemistry on the surface of single magnetic microparticles that can be manoeuvred through microfluidic devices via external magnetic fields.
The successful candidate will join an internationally established research team in the area of lab-on-a-chip devices. The preferred start date is February 2008, although later dates can be considered if necessary. Due to the interdisciplinary nature of the project, applicants with a good BSc (1st or 2.1) or MSc degree in Chemistry, Physics, Engineering or Life Sciences can all be considered. Knowledge of analytical chemistry and/or microfluidics would be of advantage but are not essential. Only UK/EU citizens are eligible for full funding (maintenance, stipend and tuition fees). The student stipend will be £12,600 per annum (tax free).
