Postdoctoral Researcher - Single-Molecule Biophysics / Cellular Mechanics
A postdoctoral position is available for a multidisciplinary effort integrating key concepts from engineering, physics, biology, chemistry, materials science, and computer science to tackle fundamental questions of how forces are generated in cells.
Potential projects include characterizing the nanomechanical properties of mitotic motor proteins, determining the viscoelastic response of complex cytoskeletal networks, and exploring the mechanisms that drive self-assembly and force generation during cell division. A variety of experimental techniques are employed, including high-resolution optical trapping, single-molecule fluorescence, advanced microscopy, and microrheometry.
The University of California, Santa Barbara provides an exceptional environment for interdisciplinary biomedical and bioengineering research with access to core facilities for microscopy/microanalysis, spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, genomics, proteomics, polymer characterization, nanofabrication, mechanical testing, and high-performance computing. On-campus interdisciplinary centers including the California Nanosystems Institute (CNSI), Center for Stem Cell Biology and Engineering, Institute for Collaborative Biotechnologies, Materials Research Laboratory (MRL), Neuroscience Research Institute, and Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics (KITP) provide myriad opportunities for collaboration.

Organosilicon chemistry directed towards molecular electronics
A new constellation in molecular electronics is being formed at Uppsala University; the Uppsala University UniMolecular Electronics Center (U3MEC) composed of eight different research groups and with focus on molecular electronics based on single or small assemblies of molecules. U3MEC comprises expertise in chemistry, physics and engineering, experimentalists as well as theoreticians.
One PhD student position in the group of Prof. Henrik Ottosson at the Department of Biochemistry and Organic Chemistry is available. The project involves design and synthesis of novel organosilicon, -germanium, and -tin compounds, and characterization of their spectroscopic and electrochemical properties as well as assembly into nanoelectronics platforms for investigations of electron transport properties.

Brain hypoxia, oxygen sensing and the role of hemo-proteins
After cardiovascular diseases and cancer, stroke and other hypoxia-related diseases are the third most common causes of death in many industrialised countries. In Europe, they represent the most important cause of morbidity and long-term disability imposing an enormous economic burden. The brains response to hypoxia and ischemia, which helps determine the clinical outcome, is a complex pattern of events including the synthesis of neuroprotective proteins. These proteins will help to counteract the adverse effects of hypoxia or ischemia by increasing anaerobic metabolism, tissue vascularity and O2 delivery or by the elimination of toxic compounds.
Neuroglobin and cytoglobin are recently discovered hemo-proteins involved in the protection of the cell against hypoxic/ischemic and oxidative/nitroso active stress. The mechanism of protection of the cell by hemo-proteins is unknown (Khan, A.A. et al. (2007) Proc Natl Acad Sci USA;104:19114-9; Brunori, M. and Vallone, B. (2007) Cell Mol Life Sci;64:1259-68; Pesce, A. et al. (2002) EMBO Rep.;3:1146-51).
We propose to unravel this mechanism by cell- and molecular biological methods (cell culture/transfection; transgenesis, micro-array and a proteomic approach).

PhD student
(Noord-Holland), 38 hours per week University of Amsterdam
Job description
Project: “Visualization of heterotrimeric G-protein mediated signaling pathways”
The Gq-PLCbeta signaling pathway plays an important role in the physiology of the brain and the heart. Our current knowledge on Gq mediated signaling is mainly derived from molecular biological and biochemical studies. These approaches do not allow to study (local) signaling in highly organized, differentiated cells of which the brain and heart are comprised. To understand the Gq-mediated signaling pathway in living cells we have tagged the components of the signaling pathway with Fluorescent Proteins. These fusion proteins will be used to study activation and interactions of Gq in living (neuronal) cells by fluorescence microscopy.
For this research a variety of techniques will be used including, molecular biology (cloning), eukaryotic cell culture and (advanced) fluorescence microscopy (FRET, FRAP, TIRF).
Requirements
Candidates should have a Master’s degree in Biochemistry, Cell biology, or Medical biology (or equivalent), have excellent communication skills and be highly motivated to conduct fundamental scientific research. Experience with fluorescence microscopy is a plus.
