Worldwide - 2009 / 2010 OFID Scholarship Award

CALL FOR APPLICATIONS

OFID (The OPEC Fund for International Development) is pleased to announce that qualified undergraduate students are welcome to apply for the OFID Scholarship 2009/10. The OFID Scholarship will be awarded to support an undergraduate student from any developing country, to pursue higher education in a relevant field of development, in any recognized university/college in the world. Through its scholarship scheme, OFID aims to help highly motivated, highly driven individuals overcome one of the biggest challenges to their careers – the cost of advanced professional or graduate training. The winner of the OFID Award will receive a scholarship of up to US$100,000 The funds will be spread over a maximum of two years, toward the completion of a Master’s degree, or its equivalent, at an accredited educational institution, starting in the autumn of the academic year 2009/10.

Eligibility
To be eligible the candidate must meet ALL of the following criteria: :

• Must be between the ages of 23-32 at the time of submitting his/her application.
• Must be a graduating student with a Baccalaureate from a four-year, accredited college/university, or its equivalent.
• Must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 rating system, or its equivalent.
• Must be matriculated at an accredited university for the upcoming academic year starting September 2009, and must maintain full-time status for the duration of the Masters Degree.
• Must be a national of a developing country (please see list of eligible countries)
• Must select a subject of study that pertains to OFID’s core mission, such as: economics of development (poverty reduction, energy and sustainable development), environment (desertification), or other related science and technology fields.

Indonesia - 2009 Sumitro Research Fellowship Grants

SUMITRO FELLOWS
2009 GRANT APPLICATIONS

The United States Indonesia Society (USINDO) invites applications for its two 2009 travel/study grants for post-doctoral scholars, Ph.D. candidates, senior academics, and otherwise professionally qualified candidates to engage in field research in Indonesia on an economic or political-economic topic. One grant is available to United States citizens and permanent residents in the United States with a specific project relating to the political economy of Indonesia. The Indonesian Sumitro Fellowship is open to an Indonesian citizen with a project related to the Indonesia-United States bilateral relationship. Previous travel to, and experience in, Indonesia or the United States (for Indonesian Sumitro applicants) is desirable but not necessarily a requirement. The deadline for the 2009 Sumitro Fellows Applications is Friday, October 31, 2008.

The Sumitro Fellows program honors Dr. Sumitro Djojohadikusumo, Indonesia’s senior economist and advisor to USINDO, who passed away in 2001. An architect of Indonesia’s modern economy, Professor Sumitro headed the faculty of economics at the University of Indonesia, and was later a minister of trade and minister of state for research.

Professor Sumitro was also the driving force behind a 1950’s program of the Ford Foundation which sent Indonesian economists to U.S. academic institutions for advanced degrees. Many attended the University of California at Berkeley and the group came to be known as the “Berkeley Mafia” when its members assumed many key cabinet posts in subsequent decades.

The Sumitro Fellows grants for the 2009 application cycle are $10 000 each.

Worldwide - 2008 Nicodemus Wilderness Project Apprentice Ecologist Initiative Scholarships

The Apprentice Ecologist Initiative™ (officially recognized by the U.S. EPA) has engaged thousands of young people (kids, teens, and college-age youth) from around the world in environmental cleanup and conservation projects. View recent Apprentice Ecologist Projects and the winners of the Apprentice Ecologist Awards.

The goals of the Apprentice Ecologist Initiative™ are to:

• Elevate youth into leadership roles by engaging them in environmental cleanup and conservation projects
• Empower young volunteers to rebuild the environmental and social well-being of our communities
• Improve local living conditions for both citizens and wildlife through education, activism, and action

Here’s how to become an Apprentice Ecologist (see project and essay tips at bottom of page):
Option I (Trash Cleanup-Stop Pollution)

• Plan a trash cleanup project of a mountain, river, shoreline, beach, park, or wilderness area with help from family, friends, or teachers.
• Remove/recycle trash from the area and take high-resolution digital photos of your project in action.

Option II (Native Tree Planting-Stop Global Warming)

• Plan a native tree planting project in your yard, neighborhood, school, park, or other natural area. Get permission from any landowners and get native tree seedlings from a local nursery.
• Plant native trees and take high-resolution digital photos of your project in action.

PT Bank Lippo Tbk (”LB”), a major investee company of Khazanah Nasional Berhad, Malaysia, believes in developing the human capital in the Republic of Indonesia. In this regard, LB is pleased to offer scholarships and financial assistance to deserving Indonesian students who intend to pursue their tertiary education at selected university in Indonesia.

Therefore, LB is inviting applications from high school graduates who would like to pursue a Bachelor’s Degree program majoring in Commerce, Finance, Economic, Accounting, Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, and Law.

The scholarship grant will be based on the merits of the applicant, including academic grades and school extra-curricular activities. However, to provide opportunities to those who would otherwise have difficulties in financing their tertiary education, special consideration will be given to applications from students that come from a financially disadvantaged family.

Worldwide - SEARCA PhD Research Scholarship in Agriculture

Launched in November 2005, the SEARCA PhD Research Scholarship provides financial support to a limited number of qualified PhD students whose researches are relevant to the priority thrusts of SEARCA.

This scholarship program aims to:

• Provide PhD students the opportunity to use the resources and facilities available at SEARCA and its network of universities for their research;
• Produce quality research papers for publication; and
• Enable them to work with SEARCA’s R&D personnel on mutually identified areas of concerns/interests in agriculture and rural development.

Eligibility for the Grant
Any graduate student who is a citizen of any SEAMEO member country and pursuing a PhD in agriculture or related sciences from any university in the world is eligible to apply for the scholarship.

The applicant must have already completed his/her course work with an approved dissertation proposal and is ready to conduct the dissertation research.
