USA - Purdue University PhD Studentship in Simulating Airflow in and around Buildings

We are seeking for two Ph.D. students to work on modeling airflow and airborne contaminant dispersion in and around buildings. One will work on inverse CFD modeling that will determine what, where, and how much an airborne contaminant could have been released and to where the contaminant could be dispersed by using limited information from one or more sensors. The other student will work on the development of simplified CFD models to enhance computing speed for calculating airflow and contaminant dispersion in and around buildings.

Both of the students will conduct necessary experimental measurements in laboratory to validate their CFD models.

The two positions will be offered with half-time Research Assistantships (RAships). A half-time RAship covers tuition and pays a stipend of around $2,050 per month to a qualified student. The initial offer is for one year and could be extended to multiple years depending on the RA’s academic performance. For particularly qualified applicants, the offer may be combined with fellowships that will increase the stipend by a few hundred dollas per month.

The applicants should have an M.Sc. degree and have demonstrated experience on computational and/or experimental fluid dynamics. Knowledge of heat transfer, thermodynamics, turbulence modeling, and HVAC systems is a plus. The applicants should be familiar with FORTRAN and C languages.

Fully funded Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) studentships are available for Sociology (including Criminology, Sociology of Sport) and Social Work (including Community and Youth Work), open to UK and EU students. We also invite applications for fully funded Durham Doctoral Fellowships (open to students from UK and overseas), Overseas Research Students Awards (overseas fees only) and Bursaries in Community and Youth Work and Social Work.

ESRC studentships
+3 studentships are for those who have already completed recognised ESRC research training at Masters level; 1+3 studentships are for those without a recognised research Masters degree. These awards include maintenance grants and tuition fees paid for UK students. For EU students the awards cover tuition fees only. Maintenance grants are £12,940 per year (2008-9 rate), and do not attract income tax or National Insurance.

Durham Doctoral Fellowships
The University offers a generous package of support to outstanding doctoral students for three years study for a PhD through the Durham Doctoral Fellowships Scheme, including: full payment of tuition fees at home or overseas rate; a maintenance stipend at the national rate (£12,940 in 2008/9); a research training support grant. The scheme is University-wide, and is open to applicants interested in studying in the School of Applied Social Sciences.

Netherlands - Delft University of Technology PhD Students in THz Near-Field Microscopy

The Optics Research Group has two PhD positions available in the field of THz near-field microscopy.

Project and job description
Under normal circumstances, light cannot be focused down to spot sizes with diameters smaller than approximately half a wavelength. For radiation with a frequency of 1 THz, which corresponds to a wavelength of 300 micrometres, this implies that it is impossible to study objects smaller than about 150 micrometre. This so-called diffraction limit poses a problem for the development of a THz microscope.

The research proposed here is about methods to overcome the diffraction limit with the aim to develop a THz microscope with a spatial resolution of about 100 nm in the 1-50 THz frequency range. This frequency range is attractive as many organic molecules have resonances in this frequency range and such a microscope will have numerous biological applications.

Normally, the diffraction limit implies that when you illuminate an object with dimensions much smaller than the wavelength with THz light, the object has a negligible effect on the field very far away from the object, in the so-called far-field. It is only in the direct neighbourhood of the object that the THz field is significantly distorted.
