Sustainable Agriculture Scholarship
Application and Guidelines
Eligibility Guidelines
Annie’s Homegrown Sustainable Agriculture Scholarship Program is open to full time undergraduate and graduate students beginning or returning to an accredited 2 or 4 year technical or college program or graduate school in the U.S. for the 2009/2010 school year. Students must be studying sustainable/organic agriculture.
Annie’s accepts applications postmarked by October 30th, 2008. Final decisions will be made by March 3, 2009, and funds will be dispersed on or around June 15, 2009.
If you are chosen to receive the award, you will be notified by a phone call and by U.S. mail. Please note: Due to the large number of applications we receive, and the fact that our scholarship committee is small, we ask for your patience. We will contact you as soon as we make our decisions. We always love to hear from you, and we understand you might be antsy to find out whether or not you are a finalist, but we ask that you please not call.

18 months postdoc position at The Biometry and Artificial Intelligence Unit of INRA (French National Institute for Agricultural Research) in Toulouse, France.
The project, funded by the French Research Agency, aims at incorporating linkage disequilibrium into linkage mapping analysis, in order to fine map QTL. It consists in developing statistical methods using linkage disequilibrium for predicting similarity of genitor alleles in a multiple families design, and developing the necessary software tools.
The aim is to attribute, at every locus of the genome, for the alleles of the genitors in the design, (i) a measurement that accurately reflects the identity by descent probability with the ancestral alleles, or (ii) a probable coalescence tree to enable ancestral alleles to be tracked.

Rural Economy Research Centre, Teagasc & UCD, Ireland (Ireland)
PhD Studentship description
This project evaluates the economic costs and benefits associated with alternative management practises of Genetically Modified (GM) crop technology. Specific research questions relating to the following issues will be examined:
- a comparison of the costs of co-existence accruing to conventional crop producers and the potential benefits accruing to GM adopting producers
- factors affecting farmer’s attitudes to GM technology adoption and
- consumer willingness to pay for GM versus non GM food end products.
This study will provide valuable lessons for policy by deepening our understanding of the economics of co-existence
of conventional and GM crop technology.

PhD Nematology
Wageningen, (Gelderland), 38 hours per week
Plant Sciences, chair group Nematology
Job description
In a concerted action, two PhD students and a post-doc will study how plants, in particular genetically modified (GM) plants, can change their own soil ecosystem. Plants can have profound effects on soil organisms, because the great majority of carbon input in soils originates from living plants (root exudates) and from dead plant material. It needs to be tested if GM plants have such influence too, and if yes, if this influence is different from non-GM plants. Crops with e.g. GM-increased resistance against pathogens and herbivores, can have side-effects on beneficial rhizosphere-inhabiting organisms; residues of crops with GM-altered tissue composition may have different decomposition rates, and thereby affect soil decomposer communities. Given the importance of the soil community for soil carbon and nitrogen cycles, effects of GM plants on non-target soil organisms and processes have to be evaluated properly prior to their admission. The research program aims to deliver a tool for risk assessment of GM plants based on soil nematodes that will enable evaluation of risks of these plants for soil fertility functions.
For the PhD Nematology we are looking for a molecular ecologist. You are asked to turn a prototype of a DNA barcode-based nematode community analysis tool into a user friendly device, and should provide guidelines to interpret the observed changes. Nematodes are a species-rich soil fauna group with great bioindicator potential. Initially, we will study non-GM Brassica species releasing different levels of glucosinolates – natural components with a broad spectrum effect on soil life. The effects of various Brassica cultivars on nematodes communities and C and N dynamics in soil will be studied. Next, the PhD will use quantitative PCR to determine whether GM crops have qualitative or quantitative effects on nematodes rhizosphere communities. This will be used to develop an Ecological Risk Assessment (ERA) guidance for GM crops.

The research group Measure, Model, and Manage Bioresponses (M3-BIORES) headed by Prof. Daniel Berckmans is one of the leading groups at bio-monitoring and control together with research on imperfectly mixed fluids around living organisms. The research objective is to measure in an on-line manner biological responses of living organisms and their individual micro-environment and to predict their dynamic response in order to monitor and control their well being, health and performance.
Currently, there exists an open position as:
Research Assistant – PhD Candidate
For one year with a global intention to complete a doctoral degree. The title of the project is:
“Monitoring of ammonia emissions from agricultural structures”
Project description and tasks:
Ammonia emission from agricultural structures is one of the current issues in environmental pollution debates. In an international consortium, M3-BIORES will apply an intermittent measurement technique where semi-continuous monitoring of ammonia emissions is possible in cheaper, robust, and reliable way.

AGRIS MUNDUS – Sustainable Development in Agriculture Masters Course
Duration: 2 years
Course description:
The AGRIS MUNDUS Master’s Course is a product of NATURA, the network of European universities with a tropical and subtropical orientation in agriculture. Since 1988, NATURA has collaborated closely with institutions in Asia, Africa and the Americas in providing post-graduate education and training opportunities. It focuses on improving the management of rural and agricultural development for disadvantaged populations. The approach utilised stresses the mobility of people throughout the network, allowing different disciplines to exchange experiences and reinforcing a common high-quality standard in education and training.
This specific course provides its students with the skills and understanding to deal with current global and international concerns in agriculture and rural development. Graduates will be qualified to identify and critically analyse key factors shaping the development of crop, forest and animal production, the management of rural development projects and, finally, the sustainable use of natural resources. They will be trained to formulate and provide effective and appropriate responses to complex agricultural and environmental issues.
