USA - University of California Postdoc Position in Linear Solver Techniques

Postdoctoral position in Linear Solver Techniques for Integrated Water Flow Model Application at University of California, Davis

A postdoctoral position is available immediately in developing and implementing reliable and efficient large-scale linear system solvers for an integrated water flow model (IWFM) application The candidates’ responsibilities involve review the linear system solutions methods, develop improved linear system solvers for IWFM application. Particular interest will be in iterative Krylov methods and their high performance implementation on multi-core and parallel computers. Experience in large-scale matrix computations and parallel computing would be desirable. The candidate is expected to closely work with a group of computational scientists at UC Davis and Department of Water Resources, State of California.

The initial appointment is for one year, and the renewal of the appointment in the following years is contingent upon excellent performance and the availability of funds. A competitive salary based on applicant qualifications and experience will be offered.

Italy - University of Padua Postdoc Position in Immunology

A postdoctoral position is available to join XENOME, a EU-funded research initiative whose objective is to generate the necessary data to allow xenotransplantation to progress closer to its initial clinical phase.

Tools that will be used to reach the XENOME ambitious objectives encompass state-of-the-art biomolecular technologies and pre-clinical in vivo models. This exciting work will be possible through a multidisciplinary collaboration with top scientists in the field of immunology, transplantation, genetic engineering, biosafety and physiology in Europe.

USA - University of Missouri Postdoc Positions in Biomedical and Satellite Image Processing, Image Analysis and Visualization

Multi-modal, multi-spectral, multi-view imaging is creating a new class of challenging research problems in image registration, rectification, localization, 3D structure estimation, object segmentation, object classification, object tracking, event analysis and multi-dimensional visualization. These common computer vision, image analysis and visualization problems are shared across multiple disciplines. We are interested in achieving realtime parallel processing using multicore GPU or Cell clusters. In terms of 3D visualization we want to track fluid or particle flows and segment large volumetric datasets using 3D levelsets.

In the biomedical area the NIH project is to locate, segment, classify and track cells in live-cell microscopy, cell lineage and cell cycle analysis. We are also developing multiphase level-set image segmentation and classification algorithms for computer aided diagnosis of large histopathology imagery.

In satellite image analysis the project is to improve hurricane forecasting by assimilating NASA satellite observations into non-parameterized numerical cloud resolving models using automatic deformable 2D/3D cloud tracking and flow visualization.

Germany - 2009 University of Heidelberg HBIGS MSc Fellowship Program in Biosciences

The Graduate School offers three fellowships for outstanding students from Africa, per year, enabling them to enroll in one of the Masters programs at the Faculty of Biosciences.

Each fellowship amounts to € 8000 p.a. and can be granted for up to two years to candidates who have a Bachelors degree in Biosciences and who wish to obtain their Masters degree in Molecular Biosciences or Molecular Biotechnology, respectively, in Heidelberg. To apply for one of the fellowships, please, include a separate letter with your application form in which you explain your financial situation.

The fellows are expected to reach the international education standard either within one year of Masters training to compete in the integrated MSc/PhD track, or after two years to compete in the “normal track” for a PhD position offered by the Graduate School.

The Faculty of Biosciences offers Bachelor programs in “Biology (90 places)”, “Molecular Cell Biology (30 places)”, and “Molecular Biotechnology (45 places)”. In 2007, a new Masters program in “Molecular Biosciences” (120 places) was launched, with Majors in “Cancer Biology”, “Developmental Biology”, “Evolution and Ecology”, “Infectious Diseases”, “Molecular and Cellular Biology”, “Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology of Plants”, “Neuroscience” and “Systems Biology”. A Masters program in “Molecular Biotechnology” (30 places), with Majors in “Drug Development”, “Bioinformatics” and “Biophysical Chemistry” has been established in 2004, in collaboration with the Faculties of Biosciences, Mathematics and Chemistry.

The Center for the Study and Development of Academic Talents (PENTA-UC) at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile in Santiago invites applications for the position of Postdoctoral Research Associate.

The successful candidate must hold a completed PhD (between December 2004 and September 2008) and is expected to show evidence of research excellence in the field of education. Good management of written and spoken Spanish is preferable but not compulsory.

Under the broad direction and academic oversight of the Center’s Director, the successful candidate will develop his/her own research agenda in the area of gifted education. In particular, research should be conducted in one of the following sub-fields: cognitive or educational needs of talented children.

The CNIO-Caja Navarra International Postdoctoral Program is possible thanks to the generous support of the ‘You choose: you decide’ initiative of Caja Navarra.

ELIGIBILITY

• Applicants must hold a PhD or MD degree before the start of the fellowship but not necessarily when applying.
• The date when the degree was awarded must be no more than 2 years prior to the time of application.
• Applicants must have a proven record of research accomplishments and at least one original first author publication (including joint authorship), either published or accepted, in an international peer-reviewed journal with a high impact factor at the
  time of application.
• The upper age limit for eligibility is 35 years.

Denmark - Technical University of Denmark PhD Scholarship in Systems Biology of Salmonella Infection

A 3-year scholarship for graduate study leading to a PhD in engineering is available in a collaborative project between 1) the Center for Systems Microbiology, Dept. of Systems Biology, Technical University of Denmark, 2) University of Copenhagen and 3) Oxford Brookes University.

Supervisors: Professor Peter Ruhdal Jensen and professor Mogens Kilstrup (DTU-Systems Biology)

The project is financed by the Research Council for Technology and production and aims to perform a systems biology analysis of the infection machinery of Salmonella, and the student will be constructing mutants and characterising these by DNA microarray and other analyses. Student will also be involved in computer modelling, part of which will be carried out at Oxford Brookes University.

Applicants are expected to have a Master’s degree and a good background in Molecular Biology/Microbiology. Fluency in English is also required.
