Worldwide - 2007 / 2008 Third Millenium Foundation Human Rights Fellowships

Grant and Application Information for Third Millennium
Foundation Human Rights Fellowships 2007-08

Program Description
The Third Millennium Foundation (TMF) established its Human Rights Fellowships in 2004 in order to support young social entrepreneurs to become human rights leaders. The TMF Human Rights Fellowships provide financial support for one year to recently graduated undergraduate and graduate students to spend six months interning with a NGO in the Global North and six months with an NGO in the Global South. Preference is given to work with a grassroots organization. One of the NGOs should be located in the country where the fellow intends to pursue her/his professional career.

Although they were originally designed to provide support to recently graduated students in the United States and Europe, this focus has now expanded. Beginning in 2007, the TMF Human Rights Fellowships will take a further step toward TMF’s global commitment by soliciting applications from candidates in the Global South in addition to the Global North.

Through the unique design of this program, TMF Human Rights Fellows are not only able to gain valuable experiences in human rights, they are also able to help build the capacity of local, national, and international NGOs. The program builds North-South networks, collaborations, and friendships and provides young leaders frontline experience in human rights advocacy. By relying on solicitations from partner universities throughout the world, the TMF Fellowships further strengthen the relationships between on-the-ground human rights work and academia.

Each Fellowship carries a stipend of US$24,000 for the full year, with the possibility of a supplement for exceptionally high travel or accommodation costs.

Overview of the Program
The TMF Human Rights Fellowships are administered by the Center for the Study of Human Rights (CSHR) at Columbia University. TMF and CSHR work with partner universities in the Global North and Global South to solicit applications. The listing of partner universities will be updated periodically. Applicants not affiliated with a partner university are welcome to apply. Candidates interested in applying should review the application guidelines below and submit their application by email to hrfellowship@tmf-tolerance.org by January 26, 2007.

Worldwide - iLiberty 2006 Fall Essay Contest

UNINTENDED CONSEQUENCES
“There oughta be a law!” Every day, politicians and policymakers propose new legislation designed to make society a better place and make us better people. iLiberty.org challenges students to think about the ways such laws affect our behavior in both predictable and unexpected ways.

ESSAY QUESTION
All policies have consequences. When the government enacts a new regulation, mandate, or ban, legislators and advocates have in mind a particular set of consequences that they hope to achieve. However, in many cases, legislation brings other consequences that were neither intended nor desired by those who supported the law. And sometimes, laws don’t even achieve the goals they were meant to bring about.

When evaluating legislation, we must consider both whether the legislation achieves its intended goals and what unintended consequences it may cause. Thinking about unintended consequences is especially important for laws designed to influence people’s behavior in their personal lives because individuals may react in unpredictable ways.
