Portugal - Technical University of Lisbon PhD Research Fellowship in Minimally Invasive Laser Dentistry

The Laser Materials Processing Laboratory of the Technical University of Lisbon has one grant available for a PhD student. We are looking for candidates with degrees in materials science or applied physics, who wish to work in laser biomedical applications. The candidates are expected to develop research within an international project on minimally invasive dental surgery using femtosecond lasers.

English or French may be used as the normal communication language at the University.

The student will receive a 3-year grant with possible extension to a forth year.

Portugal - FCT funded Postdoctoral Fellowships in Economics and Management at CEFAGE-UE

CEFAGE-UE – Center for Advanced Studies in Management and Economics (www.cefage.uevora.pt) - offers two research positions in Economics and Management, funded by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT). The hired researchers would join CEFAGE-UE’s ongoing research projects and is expected to develop independent research aimed at publication in leading international scientific journals. Job description:
CEFAGE-UE offers two research positions in Economics and Management, which are funded by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT). Successful candidates will integrate one of the following CEFAGE-UE’s research groups: Econometrics and Finance, Industrial, Labour and Spatial Economics, and Management. In recent years, research in these areas has been focusing upon the following topics:

  • Econometrics and Finance: theoretical and applied microeconometrics; moment-based estimation (GMM, empirical likelihood); bootstrap estimation and testing; specification tests for non-nested hypotheses; panel data models; measurement error and missing data; neglected heterogeneity and endogeneity in nonlinear models; efficiency and productivity analysis using stochastic frontier estimation; economic and financial applications of entropy; applied small business finance; empirical corporate finance.

DESIRE aims to make theoretical contributions to the field of creative design by bringing together expertise in human computer interaction, psychology, arts and design. The network aims to advance our understanding of creative design processes applied in the scientific and technological problem solving. This will lead to the elaboration of (i) theories and models of creative processes in general, and those involved in creative problem solving in particular, and (ii) a toolbox of methods, techniques and systems to support both creative design processes and creativity training.

The network places particular emphasis on the research training to be provided to successful candidates. Thus, each researcher will benefit from a rich training program that will take advantage of both local and network wide activities, as well as of conferences and summer schools.

Applications are invited for 13 studentships on creative design, 4 of which at Lancaster University, UK. The positions are funded by the EU for 36 months. The network requires expertise from various disciplines and the specific requirements as well as details about each individual projects can be found at: http://www.comp.lancs.ac.uk/~corina/DESIRE. Aligned with the specific requirements of each project, the applicants should have a good degree in Computer Science, Psychology, Design or Arts. Portugal - New University of Lisbon Postdoctoral Fellowship in CFD Modelling of Open-Channel Flows

The New University of Lisbon and CEHIDRO – IST, TULisbon invite scientists and engineers to apply for a Post-Doc fellowship to work in CFD modelling of open-channel flows. The position is within the Fluvial Hydraulics and Morphodynamics research group of CEHIDRO research unit. The Post-Doc will work with Joao Leal, Rui Ferreira and Mario Franca, at FCT - New University of Lisbon, Portugal.

The successful candidate will work within the framework of two research projects financed by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology, and will be responsible for CFD modelling of turbulence in open-channel flows, namely in compound channels and gravel bedded rivers. A high degree of independence is required.

Applicants should have obtained a PhD degree in a related area during the five years preceding the application date, or must be able to complete such a degree before starting the appointment. There are no restrictions for foreign applicants. Primary criteria used in the selection of participants are the applicant´s scientific capability and potential, especially as indicated by originality and independence, and the match between the applicant´s interests and the research project. Applicants should have good written and oral English skills, experience in CFD and analysis of turbulent flows, and should be able to work autonomously.

The position is for 18 months, corresponding to 27,000 € (free of taxes), and the candidate should be ready to start immediately.

The three-semester Masters program will enrol up to 32 students per year. Students will attend the first semester in Lisbon or Castellón, the second semester in Münster. The third semester (Master thesis) can be performed at each of the three partner universities.

  • The first semester offers different learning paths, addressing the previous know-how and requirements of the students. The courses at UJI focus on the provision of know-how in informatics, new media, and GI basics. UNL provides modules in mathematics, data modelling, and GI basics.
  • The second semester at the WWU provides basic and advanced courses in GIScience. In addition, courses in additional key competencies (project management, research methods) are provided. Optional for selected courses is the alternative attendance of a summer school, organized by WWU, UJI, or UNL
  • The Master thesis in the third semester is closely linked to ongoing research projects of one of the partners. Depending on the resources, students can choose each of the three universities for performing the thesis. In case of not attending a semester at each partner university, the thesis will be supervized or co-supervized by the university not attended so far.

The Masters Program will start each year in the fall/winter semester. All courses will be provided in English language. The study program will start each year in the fall/winter semester. All courses will be provided in English language.

The standard period of study is 3 semesters, including all examination requirements and Master thesis. The International Masters program requires 90 ECTS credit points.   • MIMO signal processing techniques for wireless networks using Distributed Antenna Systems and Cooperative Diversity
  • Vertical Handover for heterogeneous systems.

  • Architectures and methodologies for system level simulations of wireless networks.

You will be required to have experience in the general area of wireless communications, and software engineering with expertise in object oriented design and C++. The ideal candidate would require advanced proficiency in at least two of the following areas: cooperative diversity, distributed MIMO and coding schemes, distributed antenna systems, radio resource management, and system level simulation methodologies.

You should have a good honours degree in telecommunications or electronic engineering, and a Ph.D degree in a topic related to the above research areas.
