Poland - University of Warsaw International PhD Fellowship in Chemistry

A new International PhD program - supported by the Polish Foundation of Science - is offered by the Faculty of Chemistry, University of Warsaw, Poland. The program designed in cooperation with well-recognized international research Partner institutions is entitled “From simple molecules to nanostructured and bioactive materials

It is divided into four thematic lines reflecting increasing complexity of the studied materials:

  • Simple systems with complex molecular interactions,
  • Nanostructured materials and biomaterials,
  • From new materials to devices
  • and Biomacromolecules and therapeutic systems - modeling and development.

Students from all countries are invited to apply. The Program aims to train future scientists able to work in highly competitive environment and with abilities to work across disciplines.

Duration of the program is 4 years, including 6-24 months spent abroad in the foreign Partner institutions.

Up to 18 students will be admitted to the first or second year of the International PhD studies. The successful candidates will be able to choose a Principal Supervisor and select the subject of the project (download subjects of theses).

Poland - Polish Academy of Sciences PhD Positions in Nanoscience and Advanced Nanostructures

Krakow Interdisciplinary PhD-Project in Nanoscience and Advanced Nanostructures

Faculty of Physics & Applied Computer Science (AGH) and Institute of Catalysis and Surface Chemistry of Polish Academy of Sciences (PAN) (both of Krakow) in cooperation with research institutes of 10 European countries run a common PhD programme in Nanoscience.

The project is financed by European Union Innovative Economy Programme with Foundation for Polish Science. It has been selected for support as one of three projects in the first call for the International PhD Studies Programme (results of the competition in Polish).

8 PhD positions are opened in 2008 and 4 in 2009. The project duration is nearly 5 years, of which 6 to 24 months the students will spend abroad, mostly in Western European institutes that enter the consortium. A stipend for a month spent in Krakow is 3000 PLN and 4500 PLN abroad (tax free). This currently corresponds to 930 and 1400 EUR, respectively.

France, Italy, Spain, Germany, Norway, Finland, Poland - 2008 / 2009 Erasmus Mundus Scholarships: Advanced Spectroscopy in Chemistry Master Course (ASC)

ASC - Master of Science: Advanced Spectroscopy in Chemistry
Duration: 2 years

Course description:
The Advanced Spectroscopy in Chemistry Masters course is a two year (120 ECTS) programme within 7 european universities, providing students with state of the art spectroscopic techniques in a broad range of modern chemistry applications. The ASC Master of Science diploma is delivered after completion of 90 ECTS (3 semesters) of courses and 30 ECTS of a Master thesis.

Courses are taught in English at the seven partner universities. The network student population will be in the 60-70 brackets, with a student to teacher ratio of 2.0 or better. The ASC programme recruits students with a Eurobachelor in Chemistry, or holders of equivalent degrees, and a B2 prerequisite English level.

The selected students will study in at least 2 countries (minimum mandatory mobility: one semester):

  • A 1st semester at Lille (FR) or Leipzig (DE), dedicated to provide all candidates with a common platform of core courses in advanced spectroscopic methods, including magnetic resonance, mass spectrometry, optical spectroscopy and diffraction techniques.
  • A second semester at Lille (FR) or Leipzig (DE), where in addition to courses in spectroscopy, the ASC curriculum prepares students for specialisation courses and research projects to be carried out at a later date, in which spectroscopy will be the backbone.
  • A 3rd semester mobility in any of the consortium institutions for specialization courses, where expansion is provided with applications in the following specialties :
    • Univ. of Bergen (NO): Spectroscopy of natural products.
    • Univ. of Bologna (IT): Quantum Chemistry, Catalysis.
    • Univ. of Helsinki (FI): Spectroscopy of Environmental and Green Chemistry.
    • Univ. of Krakow (PL): Optical Spectroscopy, Computational and Forensic Chemistry
    • Univ. Leipzig (DE): Bioorganic NMR, Protein Crystallography.
    • Univ. of Lille (FR): Solid State Spectroscopy - NMR, X ray diffraction.
    • Univ. of Madrid (ES): Chemical sensors, ultrafast Lasers and femtochemistry.
  • A 4th semester mobility in any of the consortium institutions upon student choice of a research topic towards the Master thesis, which will be strongly encouraged to be based on a collaborative project between two of the partner institutions.

A Summer school will be organised each year in the ASC Master programme, at the end of the first year, bringing ASC students in one location as a group. The ASC Master aims to prepare students to become experts and develop international skills
towards doctoral programs and/or professional activities in chemical analysis, characterization of the structures of materials, and measurements of fast phenomena.

Europe - 2008 / 2009 Erasmus Mundus Scholarships: International Masters in Economy, State & Society (IMESS)

Erasmus Mundus Scholarships - IMESS: International Masters in Economy, State and Society

Duration in months: 24 months

Course description:
Building on the existing strengths of six leading European universities, this Masters programme in Economy, State & Society situates the study of the emerging economies and societies of Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) in a global context. The multidisciplinary, language-based programme is organised along four tracks:

  • Economics and Business
  • Politics and Security
  • Nation and Society
  • History and Culture

The states of CEE have undergone far-reaching political, economic and social change since 1989, culminating in the 2004 and 2007 European Union enlargements. Understanding the comparative economic advantages of the CEE states, their relationship with the EU border states, the importance of migration flows, health and security for the wider region as well as the obstacles faced in developing a truly knowledge-based economy are essential both for the European and the global community. This MA will raise the global expertise in this area by addressing these key issues in the context of the region’s economies, states and societies.

Participants spend the first year at University College London and the second at a university in the CEE country whose language they have been studying.

In year 1: all students: study a language; take electives relating to their specialist track; undertake research methodology courses; and participate in a variety of research skills modules – including ‘Academic writing in English’.

In year 2, students continue to receive language training, produce a 15-20,000-word research dissertation in English and
take additional specialised electives. All non-language elements of the course are conducted in English.

Graduates of the programme will have acquired language competence, cultural awareness and a deep-rooted knowledge and understanding of the economies, states and societies of CEE. Graduates will have developed a set of skills suited to entering a career in the private or public sectors or for developing a research career in academia.

Eligibility
All applicants should hold an upper second class honours degree (or overseas equivalent) with honours in a relevant subject area and must provide evidence of English proficiency (IELTS/TEOFL Advanced Level – see FAQs for full requirements in subtests and overall scores).

Application
Third-country applicants (i.e. those outside of the European Economic Area) are eligible to apply for one of a number of Erasmus Mundus Scholarships of €21,000 per year towards fees and other costs. The scholarship does NOT cover all costs.

The next Erasmus Mundus Scholarship deadline is 18 January 2008 – UCL registry must have received your full application by no later than this date.

Apply online at UCL (University College London)
When you log into the online application system, choose the ‘Departments’ drop down menu, select SSEES and you should see a list of about 20 programmes. On that list is programme R7U5 under the title ‘Economy, State and Society’ - that is IMESS!
