Assistant Professors and Post-doctoral Fellows are appointed for a fixed term of up to three years. Contracts may be renewed once for an additional three years (i.e. six years in total). The remuneration package is competitive at the international level (30,000-45,000 EUR pre-tax for Post-doctoral Fellows and 45,000-60,000 EUR pre-tax for Assistant Professors) and includes generous research funds. Additional benefits may be negotiated with selected applicants.

Europe - Edmund Mach Foundation PhD Studentship in Ecological Modelling

The Edmund Mach Foundation (FEM) was established in 2007 jointly by the Autonomous Province of Trento and the Agricultural Institute at San Michele all’Adige (IASMA). FEM will carry forward and expand the mission of IASMA (established in 1874) of sustaining Trentino’s land-based economy through experimentation, education and technological transfer (advisory service). Additionally, the FEM is now establishing a Research and Innovation Centre that aims at playing an international leading role in research and innovation in three main research areas:

A1) Genomics and Molecular Breeding of Fruit Crops.
A2) Food Quality and Natural Products Biotechnologies.
A3) Biodiversity and Biocomplexity of Alpine and Mountain Ecosystems.

The Foundation carries out research project funded by the Province of Trento like the ENRIVOCHANGE project (Global change and sustainable management of agriculture in highly developed mountain environment). The graduated student will work on cataloguing and development of ecological models for the main pathogen and parasites and quality of crops. In particular collecting existing models and historical data and integration in the system called ENVIRO.

Italy - University of Padua Postdoc Position in Immunology

A postdoctoral position is available to join XENOME, a EU-funded research initiative whose objective is to generate the necessary data to allow xenotransplantation to progress closer to its initial clinical phase.

Tools that will be used to reach the XENOME ambitious objectives encompass state-of-the-art biomolecular technologies and pre-clinical in vivo models. This exciting work will be possible through a multidisciplinary collaboration with top scientists in the field of immunology, transplantation, genetic engineering, biosafety and physiology in Europe.

The successful candidate will join the Transplant Immunology Unit at University of Padua-Padua Medical Center, where basic research and preclinical studies assessing renal, islet and neuronal xenotransplantation will take place.

We invite applications for three European Research Council-funded postoctoral research positions starting December 1, 2008, or as soon as possible thereafter.

The successfull candidates will work with Dr. Ulisse Stefanelli at the Institute of Applied Mathematics and Informations Technology (IMATI) of the CNR. The research will form part of the 5-years ERC-funded program BioSMA: Mathematics for Shape Memory Technologies in Biomechanics. This project is aimed at developing the mathematical treatment of the behavior of special materials, especially shape memory alloys. Applicants should have, or should have submitted, at the same time of taking up the post, a PhD in Mathematics, Scientific Computing, Computational Engineering or closely related areas. They should have a background in partial differential equations and related techniques of analysis/computation and/or experience of programming. Moreover, an interest in applications of mathematics modeling and the ability to interact effectively in an interdiciplinary team are required. Knowledge and expertise in solid mechanics and a good publication record will be preferred.

Italy - University of Modena and Reggio Emilia PhD Studentship in Biophysics

Job description
Protein folding remains a major unsolved challenge for modern biophysics. Despite the experimental and theoretical efforts of many laboratories in the last 40 years, our understanding of the basic rules that govern the attainment of a protein structure is still incomplete. This lack of information is partly due to the inadequacy of conventional bulk methods to study a process that is highly heterogeneous. During folding, individual molecules are thought to follow different pathways and populate different intermediate structures on their journey to the native state. Such a diversity of behaviors is often blurred in the ensemble average measured by bulk methods.

Recent advances in single molecule manipulation techniques, such as laser tweezers, have made it possible to revisit protein folding with a new approach. In these experiments, individual molecules are directly manipulated and their unfolding and refolding trajectories described along a well-defined reaction coordinate, namely their molecular end-to-end distance. In a work published in Science, Cecconi et al. has recently presented a method to manipulate individual globular proteins using laser tweezers [Cecconi et al., Science 2005; Cecconi et al., European Biophysics Journal 2008]. Using this novel experimental approach, Cecconi et al. investigated the folding pathways of single RNase H molecules with unprecedented details, uncovering information inaccessible to ensemble methods.
