Belgium - Catholic University of Leuven PhD Position in “Characterisation of the Fabric Deformation” Project

RESEARCH ASSISTANT (FOR PHD STUDIES)
Position opens: January 2009
Project duration: 2009 - 2012 (4 years)
Project title: Simulation Based Solutions for Industrial Manufacture of Large Infusion Composite Parts (INFUCOMP) – Framework program 7 of the European Commission

K.U. Leuven is responsible for the work package of the project: “Characterisation of the fabric deformation

Objectives of the work

  1. The modelling work follows two parallel (but interrelated) routes;

    • macro-model development for models to be implemented in existing state-of-the-art draping software PAM-FORM;
    • and mathematical meso-modelling to extend the WiseTex software, with the aim to replace/reduce testing and provide (future) direct input to FE analysis.
  2. Compare the macro-models; one (or both) will be selected and used for drape modelling and provide input for infusion/mechanical performance data.
  3. New tests on the selected project fabrics will be performed to gather essential data on deformation, shear and through-thickness compression behaviour. Data will be used for fabric modelling and, furthermore, permeability testing/modelling.
  4. Experimental work will contribute to ‘standardisation’ of fabric testing and, where necessary, new procedures will be proposed. It is expected there will be a useful contribution to future standards.

Position description
The project offers full funding of a 4-year PhD program to be carried out at K.U.Leuven, combined with Research Assistant position in the Department MTM, in the Composite Materials Group

Belgium - Hasselt University PhD Studentship in Neuroimmunology

Vacature 32/175-2e

The Biomedical Research Institute of Hasselt University has a vacancy for a (m/f):

PhD student Neuroimmunology (2×2 years)(mandate MBW/2008/025)

Job description
Research at the Biomedical Research Institute (BIOMED, Hasselt University) focuses on disease mechanisms of multiple sclerosis (MS) and the development of new therapeutics for this neuro-inflammatory disease. The group uses various modern technologies in immunology, molecular biology, cell biology and imaging to study immune system alterations and immune mediated damage of oligodendrocytes during MS. Recent data show that immune responses in the CNS are not merely detrimental but also have protective effects e.g. by producing neurotrophic factors such as neurokines. The successful applicant will further investigate immune mediated neuroprotective mechanisms in MS. This project is part of a recently approved Methusalem Program called NEURONET. NEURONET brings together researchers from Hasselt University and Antwerp University (VIB) headed by prof. Christine Van Broeckhoven (UA) and prof. P. Stinissen (UHasselt) specialized in clinical neurology, neuropathology, neuroimmunology, genetics and genomics, cell biology, mouse models and therapeutics in the domain of neurodegenerative diseases.

Belgium - 2009 VLIR-UOS ITP and ICP Scholarship Programme in Various Fields

Every year, with the support of the Belgian Directorate-General for Development Cooperation (DGDC), VLIR-UOS awards scholarships to students from developing countries to study one of the 15 International Course Programmes (ICPs) or one of the 6 International Training Programmes (ITPs). The ICPs and ITPs target people from the South with a responsible position in civil society (at a university, school, NGO, ministry, etc).

Each year there are a maximum of 180 scholarships available for first-year ICP students and a maximum of 70 scholarships for ITP participants.

Training Programmes (ITP)
ITPs are short-term training programmes whose main focus is transferring skills rather than knowledge. The International Training Programmes are designed for people from developing countries with a certain degree of professional experience.

The ITPs aim at transferring knowledge and skills, and create the possibility for cooperation and networking.

Belgium - Catholic University of Leuven PhD Positions in Molecular Physiology of Plants and Micro-organisms

A PhD position is available at the Unit of Molecular Physciology of Plants and Micro-organisms of the University of Leuven (Belgium) for a motivated scientist with an interest in molecular plant physiology, signalling, transgenic plant generation and botechnological applications.

This position is targeted at candidates from non-EEA countries (European Economic Area = European Union + Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway) and have a Masters degree in Life Sciences (Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Biophysics, Bioengineering…). Applications are invited from enthusiastic graduates with an excellent study track record. We offer a challenging research environment and an intense experience leading to a PhD degree.

Mankind is becoming increasingly dependent on plant production, not only for staple foods, but also for energy, fine chemicals, functional foods, drugs and vaccines. Four KULeuven labs have joined forces to contribute to the development of superior crops with higher yields and biomass through optimization of carbon allocation and stress tolerance.

Plants use glucose and sucrose ’signals’ to coordinate metabolism withenvironmental and hormonal signals for optimal growth and development. So far, no sucrose sensor(s) have been identified in plants. Sucrose signalling affects germination, senescence, flowering and anthocyanin production. The specific induction of anthocyanin biosynthesis will be exploited for massive screening of Arabidopsis seedlings from a T-DNA insertion mutant collection on growth medium containing high sucrose concentrations or inhibitors/treatments causing intracellular accumulation of sucrose, with visual and non-destructive selection for the absence of the deep purple colour of anthocyanin accumulation.

Belgium - University of Antwerp PhD Studentship in Transport and Regional Economics

Pre-doctoral researcher / Ph.D. student - Project: The influence of congestion and congestion policy on the efficiency of business logistics processes

The University of Antwerp is a knowledge centre with 3.400 employees involved in ground-breaking and innovative research of international standing. The university takes special care to ensure optimum support and supervision of students, and pays constant attention to educational innovation. The University is an autonomous pluralistic institution that is committed to the enhancement of an open, democratic and multicultural society, and it pursues an equal opportunities policy.

The Department of Transport and Regional Economics of the Faculty of Applied Economics (University of Antwerp) will recruit a full-time

Pre-doctoral researcher / Ph.D. student
for a research project on
The influence of congestion and congestion policy on the efficiency of business logistics processes.

Promotor: Dr. Wout Dullaert, Associate professor of operations and logistics management
Co-promotor: Dr. Bruno De Borger, Professor of Economics

This research project aims at examining the impact of congestion and congestion policy on the logistics efficiency of companies. This issue is studied both from an operations research and an economic perspective. To investigate the effects of congestion and congestion policy at the level of an individual decision maker, several OR models will be developed to estimate the impact on (i) an individual link of the supply chain, (ii) on the size and positioning of safety stocks in an existing supply chain, and (iii) on redesigning a supply chain. For the economic analysis, partial equilibrium models will be designed to analyze the effects of congestion and congestion policy on fundamental logistics key performance indicators (e.g. average stock levels, service levels etc).
