Sweden - 2007/2008 Guest Scholarships for Advanced Academic Studies or Research

The Swedish Institute, a public agency for cultural and educational exchange with individuals and institutions abroad, hereby announces a number of GUEST SCHOLARSHIPS for the academic year 2007/ 2008 (September 2007 - May 2008). The scholarships are applied for in global competition and are open to foreign students/researchers who wish to come to Sweden as guest students and who do not intend to settle permanently in Sweden.

GENERAL CRITERIA

Citizenship
In principle, the Guest Scholarships are open for students from any part of the world except from the Nordic countries (Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden). However, the Swedish Institute also administers a regional scholarship programmes, the Visby Programme (Belarus, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Northwest Russia - including Moscow - and Ukraine). Applicants from these regions should submit the application within this programme only. There are no national quotas. The Swedish Institute will distribute the scholarships as evenly as possible among applicants from different geographical areas.

Age
There is no age limit.

Study level
The scholarships are intended for students at advanced university level, for part of Ph.D. or post-doc studies at any university or university college in Sweden or for participation in a Master’s Level Programme. There are no scholarships available for undergraduate studies. The scholarships cannot be granted for a complete course of study leading to a Ph.D. degree.

Study period
The maximum scholarship period is three academic years but the scholarships are usually granted for one academic year (nine months) at a time. They can also be awarded for study periods of shorter duration. The scholarships are intended to finance a temporary stay in Sweden.

Fields of study
Scholarships are granted for studies within all subjects. There are no scholarships available for learning basic Swedish.

Languages
Foreign students in Sweden
Students already studying in Sweden are eligible to apply provided that they are not permanent residents, nor holders of a Swedish work permit, and they may not have been living in Sweden for more than two years when the scholarship is due to begin. (*Not applicable for EU citizens.)

Scholarship conditions
At present, the scholarships amount to SEK 8,000 per month for graduate and research students and SEK 12,000 for holders of a Ph.D. degree. Each scholarship is designed to cover the living expenses of ONE person only. There are no grants of any kind for family members. Scholarship holders from developing countries will also receive a partial travel grant. The scholarship holder is insured by the Swedish Institute against illness and accident during the scholarship period.

HOW TO APPLY

Advanced University Level, part of Ph.D. studies and post-doc studies

Letter of invitation
Prior to application, the applicant must establish contact with a Swedish university department willing to accept the applicant for the proposed studies. This contact can also be made through the professor or academic adviser at the applicant’s home institution.

In order to enable the Swedish host institution to consider issuing a letter of invitation, the applicant must, as a minimum requirement, clearly indicate their study or research area and include a C.V. or résumé of their previous study or research.

Apply on-line
Applications to the Guest Scholarship Programme will be made on-line through our website www.studyinsweden.se between 1 November 2006– 15 January 2007.

Applications made after that date will not be considered.

The application must be completed in its entirety, and all documents mentioned in the information must be enclosed when submitted. Incomplete applications will be rejected.

The outcome of the applications will be announced to candidates in May 2007. Individual questions concerning the application procedure will not be answered.

Master’s Level Programmes

Applications for a Master’s Level Programme (listed in the Swedish Institute brochure Master’s Level Programmes Taught in English and also available on www.studyinsweden.se) should be sent directly to the university/university college in question.

Applicants for a Master’s Level Programme should clearly indicate in their application to the Master’s Level

Programme whether they wish to be considered for a scholarship.

The university/university college will recommend a limited number of candidates for a Swedish Institute scholarship. The Swedish Institute will then make the final selection of candidates for a scholarship. In the scholarship selection process, we give priority to students who are not already pursuing a Master’s Level Programme in Sweden.

Please observe that applicants to a Master’s Level Programme should not apply for a scholarship directly to the Swedish Institute. Applications sent to the Swedish Institute will not be considered.

All questions concerning the application procedure for the Master’s Level Programme should be directed to the university/university college concerned.

The outcome of the applications will be announced to candidates in June 2007. Individual questions concerning the application procedure will not be answered.

    I am a young Cameroonian and a holder of a Diploma (5 years University Program ) in Agricultural Economics and rural Sociology for the Faculty of Agronomy and Agricultural sciences of the university of Dschang in Cameroon. For the past three years I have been very active in rural development work serving with NGOs in Cameroon. So far my intervetion and the results obtained has positioned me well as an effective development practioner. how ever, more challenges still exist since poverty still continues to jeopardise the livelihoods of rural communities in Cameroon. This entails the necessity of qualified and efficient human resources.
    I have been striving to further my studies in the area of Development Studies or Natural Resource Management so as to acquire skills and capacity that can enable me drive change processes to improve on the livelihoods situttion of the poor masses in Cameroon and why not the developing world atlarge. How ever, this dream has always been constraint by financial limitations.
    So I wisht that you can assist me secure a scholarship to help pursue postgraduate studies in the above mentioned areas of studies in either UK, Demark, Norway, sweden or Germany.

    iam an african young boy currently working in a rural area in East Africa - Tanzania as a clinical officer employed by our local district council which is in Kilimanjaro Region, Tanzania East Africa. In my place of work i use to provide intergrated health services to my poor local community such as running sexual transmitted infection clinic, voluntary counseling testing for HIV, facilitating post testing clubs for people living with HIV/AIDS,promoting behaviour changes and continues support and counseling for people infected and affected by HIV/AIDS,facilitating intergrated management of childhood illness for under five childrens, delivery services for pregnant mothers including prevention of mother to child transmission of HIV for pregnant mothers, family planning and re-productive health services and lastly managing inpatient and outpatient clinic for the local health center that i work with. I have been selected to join local medical university for a degree program in medicine from April 2007 but unable to pay for the university school fees which amount to USD $4000 per year for five academic years. This is too expensive for me to afford and my local district council is not able to pay for me. I am requesting for financial assistance to help me to pay for the university fees. I will appreciate your help to enable me studying more which will empower me with more skills and knowledge to care and to manage the ill people in my community. Thanks

    I am a Sri Lankan. I have Sri Lankan B.Sc. in Physical science and Postgraduate diploma in Applied Statistics. Now I am going to be turned to 43 year of age. Because of some crisies happened in my country during my university period, I passed out from the university with the above B.Sc. degree three year latter than the scheduled time. At the moment I am employed in a statistical profession at a university of Sri Lanka. I recieved confirmation in the post because of my Postgraduate diploma. I am a mother of to children. Because of the bussy and hard period I had with looking after children, going to work place and house work I couldn’t continue my studies. From the month of October of the year 2006, I got a transfer to the Medical Faculty of the University. My job in this faculty is to do statistical analysis parts of the medical researches done by Medical Professionals.

    For my promotion grade also I need a research degree of duration 2 years or more than that. When think about my duties and my promotion needs, I am in a very much need position of obtaining research degree to my position. And also now my children are grown and independent.

    Because of my age, our family income is not enough to spend money for a foriegn education, no financial support for me from the work place for foriegn education and no statistic field research education available in Sri Lanka, the only way I can come to a stable position in my post is recieving a scholarship with financial support to complete my studies.

    It is greatly appreciated if am given a opportunity over come my difficult position by offering a scholarship to satisfy my educational needs. Also then I will be able to do a great support to medical field of my country by helping the medical researches with a higher statistical knowledge.
