PhD position in Evolutionary Genetics (1,0 fte)
at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences
(Groningen), University of Groningen
Job description
Little information is available about which genes are involved in male-male competition and female choice, and how these genes are interrelated as assumed by several models of sexual selection. Recent developments in methodology for dissecting genetic architectures (e.g. high resolution genomic markers for quantitative trait locus (QTL) analysis, gene expression profiling) in addition to classical methods (e.g. artificial selection) make it possible to functionally analyse the relation between genotype and phenotype.
This project will investigate the genetic architecture of mating behaviour and reproductive strategies in Nasonia wasps, a species that is being used increasingly in evolutionary biology research since its genome was completely sequenced. Mating behaviour is an important aspect of pre-zygotic isolation and appears to evolve rapidly in response to maladaptive hybridization between species. Nasonia wasps are particularly suited for genetic analysis of behaviour because of their haplodiploid mode of reproduction. We will use a combination of artificial selection, QTL analysis and high throughput micro-array technology to identify the genes that are responsible for mating traits (e.g. within host mating, male agression and site-fidelity, remating rates, mate discrimination) with respect to their number, their effects and their epistatic interactions.
Requirements
We are looking for a masters or equivalent degree in biology with preferably a strong background in evolutionary and molecular genetics. The project is expected to be very demanding and asks for a very creative mind. The candidate should also have a strong interest in experimental work on insects. Good proficiency of the English language is required. The candidate is supposed to attend graduate courses and assist in teaching (10% of time).
Organization
University of Groningen
Founded in 1614. One of the best universities in Europe and the world. A wide variety of disciplines. Internationally oriented. Rooted in the North of the Netherlands. Socially active. Our researchers and lecturers are inspired academics. Ambitious students. We respect the differences in talent, ambitions and performance of the 25.000 students and 5.500 members of staff.
The University provides a career advisory service for partners of new staff who move to Groningen.
The University is an equal opportunities employer. Because women are still underrepresented in a number of fields, they are particularly encouraged to apply.
The Evolutionary Genetics group is part of the Centre for Ecological and Evolutionary Studies (CEES) in the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences of the University of Groningen. Areas of research include speciation, evolution of reproductive systems, conservation genetics and life-history evolution; main model organisms are the fruit fly Drosophila and the parasitic wasp Nasonia. The group provides a lively, internationally oriented, scientific environment with excellent facilities.
Conditions of employment
Employment basis: Temporary for specified period
Duration of the contract: 4 years
Additional conditions of employment:
The university offers a salary of € 2000,- gross (bruto) salary per month in the first year to € 2558,- gross salary in the final year. Objective of the temporary 4 years position is a number of research articles in peer-reviewed scientific journals, together comprising the PhD thesis leading to the granting of the PhD degree (Dr.) at the University of Groningen. After the first year there is an evaluation for feasibility of successful completion of the PhD thesis within the next 3 years.
