Project Title: Exploring the link between dietary fat, obesity and asthma
We have recently obtained exciting and novel data demonstrating that a high fat intake worsens airway inflammation in asthma. High fat diets are also strongly associated with obesity. Obesity is associated with increased asthma risk, however evidence of a causal relationship is lacking. Our model that suggests they are linked by a high fat diet, which initiates both conditions. This PhD project explores the link between asthma and obesity, by establishing whether asthma and/or obesity increase susceptibility to fat-induced airway inflammation. It will also examine the effect of corticosteroid use on appetite, caloric intake and inflammation. This is highly important, as the efficacy of corticosteroids may be reduced if increased appetite is simultaneously driving diet-induced airway inflammation. Establishing that a high fat diet is a potentiator for asthma would be very relevant to disease management and a highly significant public health issue.
