One post doctoral fellowship and two PhD fellowships in nanomaterials research related to energy technology are available at the Department of Materials Science and Engineering and Department of Chemical Engineering.

Nanotechnology will play a significant role in developing materials and heterogeneous processes neccessary for developing a more sustainable energy infrastructure. The positions are related to catalytic and electrocatalytic processes critical to many advanced energy conversion systems, such as fuel cells and processes for the production of hydrogen from bio- and fossil sources. The project is a collaborative effort between NTNU (deposition of catalysts on carbon-nanofibres and electrochemical characterisation) and University of Maryland (methods for the production of bimetallic catalysts).

  • PhD 1: The assignment is primarily to produce catalyst supports based on carbon nanofibres, deposition of catalysts onto the support, and characterisation of the supported catalysts. Characterisation will include micropscopy and spectroscopic techniques, as well as measurements of catalytic activity.
  • PhD 2: The candiate will perform studies of electrocatalytic processes for applications in fuel cells, which include fundamental electrochemical and materials characterisation of catalysts for electrochemical combustion (oxidation) of small organic molecules. A significant part of the position will deal with studies of electrochemical kinetics and mechanisms related to applications in PEM fuel cells.
  • Post doc: The holder of the postdoctoral fellowship may choose to work primarily in either of the two areas indicated for the PhD-positions above, depending on qualifications and preferences. However, the cadidate will in addition to this be assigned a responsibility for coordination of the the two sub-projects. This endows the position with a certain interdisciplinary character, and it will be the role of the post doctor to assure coherence of the total project. Both candiates with a background in electrochemistry, catalysis, or materials science are therefore encouraged to apply. The post doctor will also be responsible for catalyst design based on micromodeling.

For all positions the primary workplace will be Department of Chemical Engineering or Department of Materials Science and Engineering, NTNU, Trondheim, Norway. The positions imply short term research stays at University of Maryland, USA.

For the PhD positions the successful candidate will hold a university degree (Master of Science or equivalent) in materials science, chemistry or physics.

Applicants for the postdoctor position are expected to hold a PhD in a research area relevant for the position. For all positions experience in synthesis, especially of nanomaterials, will be considered an advantage.

The appointment will be in accordance to prevailing national directives as PhD fellow at universities with supplementary directives for NTNU. The recipients for the PhD positions are obliged to take part in an organised PhD programme while employed at NTNU. Their MSc degree results are thus expected to qualify for acceptance as a PhD student at NTNU. Conditions of the employment are regulated by contract.

NTNU’s PhD-rules require a master degree or equivalent with at least 5 years of studies and an average grade of A or B within a scale of A-E for passing grades (A best). Candidates from universities outside Norway are kindly requested to send a Diploma Supplement or a similar document, which describes in detail the study and grade system and the rights for further studies associated with the obtained degree: http://ec.europa.eu/education/policies/rec_qual/recognition/diploma_en.html

The appointment will be made according to the general regulations regarding university employees.

  • Post doctor: Either of the above.

PhD scholarship recipients are employed for up to four years with 25 % teaching duty included in the position. The salary is adjusted according to the Norwegian state salary scale at 43 points, corresponding to Norwegian kr 325 600,- at appointment, with a deduction of 2 % premium for the Norwegian State Pension Fund. Post doctors are given a salary of 54 through 77 points, Norwegian state salary scale, corresponding to Norwegian kr 394.700 - 613.100 per year. Normally, post doctors are given a salary corresponding to 54 points, with a deduction of 2 % premium for the Norwegian State Pension Fund.

The application must contain information on previous education, exams, and professional experience. Please enclose testified copies of certificates and testimonials, as well as publications and other scientific reports that the applicant would like the University to consider, preferably in three copies. Having produced such publications is, however, not a requirement for the PhD positions. Joint papers will be considered, but in these cases the candiate should account for her or his contribution.

Inquiries about the positions may be sent directly to Magnus Rønning, De Chen, or Svein Sunde (see above).
