- Optical flow measurement - the development of novel planar flow techniques for measurements
in wind tunnels and turbomachinery. - Fibre sensors - the development and application of advanced fibre optic sensor systems for advanced composite material processing and structural monitoring, smart materials, chemical sensing, geological monitoring, and novel devices. Technology includes fibre gratings (Bragg and long-period) and nanoscale devices based on Langmuir-Blodgett and thin film technology
- Full-field Interferometry - optical and image processing instrumentation development for surface strain analysis, shape, and vibration on turbomachinery and helicopter components.
- Medical applications - fibre optic instrumentation for the detection of cancer
- Optical gas sensing - Development of advanced instruments to detect and measure gas, with application to safety, process control and environmental monitoring.
SPONSORSHIP
Fully funded PhD, MPhil or MSc by Research Studentships are currently available to UK/EU students. Fee contribution scholarships are available for international students.
