Carbon Nanomaterials for Quantum Information Processing
Grade 7 / Salary in the range £26,666 to £29,139 pa / Job Ref: DJ07/022
Applications are invited for a postdoctoral position, available for up to 18 months, in experimental quantum control of electron spins in carbon nanomaterials for quantum information processing. You will join a talented team pursuing a programme to demonstrate controlled quantum entanglement and transfer of quantum information in carbon nanomaterials consisting of endohedral fullerenes and carbon nanotubes.
The emerging field of quantum nanotechnology will exploit exotic quantum phenomena such as the coherent superposition of quantum states, non-locality, and entanglement, to create devices for tasks that would not be feasible using classical phenomena alone. Quantum information processing (QIP), the technology that would result from manipulating coherent superpositions of states, has immense potential for certain applications. You will be expected to undertake innovative research in the synthesis of carbon nanomaterials and/or measuring their properties for quantum information processing. There may be opportunities for travel to national and international collaborators, and for helping with supervising graduate students. The research is highly interdisciplinary.
You must have a good first degree and have completed a doctorate (by the start date) in Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science, Engineering, or a related physical science subject. You should have proven ability in innovative and effective experimental research in the physical sciences, preferably involving spectroscopy or transport measurements. It will be an advantage to have experience in one or more of the following areas: synthetic organic chemistry, physical chemistry, electron spin resonance, optical spectroscopy, quantum transport physics, device fabrication, focussed ion beams, electron microscopy, quantum information processing, carbon-based materials including fullerenes and nanotubes. Evidence of a previous track record of close interaction with theorists will be a strong advantage. You must be well organised and self-motivated with the ability to work independently and as part of an interdisciplinary team, with excellent oral and written communication skills in English. We shall be looking for a strong publication record commensurate with your stage of career.
Further particulars, including instructions on applying for this post, are available from the web-site: http://www.materials.ox.ac.uk or from Mrs K Fewings, Department of Materials, University of Oxford, Parks Road, Oxford OX1 3PH (email: posts@materials.ox.ac.uk), or telephone 01865 273680 (post reference DJ07/022).
The closing date for applications is 28 September 2007 with interviews currently planned for the week commencing 15 October 2007.
