Course description:
DILL (International Master in Digital Library Learning) is a two-year Master Programme for information professionals who intend to work in the complex world of digital libraries. It is a cooperative project between Oslo University College (Norway), Tallinn University (Estonia) and Parma University (Italy).
Learning objectives
- To develop knowledge and skills of digital librarianship through studying the cutting edge of digital library research as well as real world applications and best practices.
- To develop research skills through independent, yet supervised, research projects within the digital environment, applying relevant methods and analytical approaches.
- To understand the impact of digital environments on the role of information professionals in the knowledge society.
The students will acquire a joint Master degree (120 ECTS), recognised by all three partners. The Master Programme is intended for a group of maximum 30 students coming from European and third countries. The target groups include for example librarians, archivists, curators, administrators and technologists. The Master Programme will qualify for practical tasks, such as managing digital conversion programmes, implementing digital libraries as well as developing and implementing digital library educational programmes and doing research.
The first three terms consist of 6 modules, each amounting to 15 ECTS. In the last term the students write their Master Thesis amounting to 30 ECTS. DILL is delivered on campus, and the students will spend terms at each partner institution according the course structure below.
Year 1: 4 modules (60 ECTS)
- Digital Documents (Oslo)
- Research Methods and Theory of Science (Oslo)
- Information and Knowledge Management (Tallinn)
- Human Resource Management (Tallinn)
Year 2: 3 modules (60 ECTS)
- Access to Digital Libraries (Parma)
- Users and Usages of Digital Libraries: Quantitative and Qualitative Evaluation (Parma)
- Thesis (either of the partners)
Eligibility
Third-country applicants to DILL can apply for an Erasmus Mundus scholarship. For each student, the scholarship amounts to €21,000 per academic year
Definition of eligible third-country applicants:
- Citizens coming from all countries other than:
- The 27 EU Member States (Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, The Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, The UK)
- The EEA-EFTA states (Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway)
- The candidate countries for accession to the EU (presently Croatia, The Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, and Turkey)
- Applicants cannot not have been residents of, or carried out their main activities (studies, work, etc.) in, any of the above countries for more than a total of 12 months over the last five years.
Requirements for all DILL students:
- A degree in Library and Information Science (based on no less than three years of full-time study – 180 ECTS) or equivalent qualifications, such as a degree in another relevant subject.
- English skills. Students from non-English speaking countries must have passed:
- either IELTS (International English Language Testing System) (minimum score: 5.5 points)
- or TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) (minimum score: 550 on the paper based test, 213 on the computer based test, or 79 on the Internet based test).
- Not all applicants need to submit a TOEFL or IELTS test certificate. If you are in doubt as to whether or not you may be exempted, please contact the DILL Administration for more information.
- Knowledge and skills of computers for information use.

To apply to the DILL Master Programme, please submit the following documents:
- Completed application form (PDF).
- A recently updated Curriculum Vitae (CV).
- A short statement of purpose (approx. 500 words), for example describing your motivation, subjects of interest, what you would like to achieve, and so forth.
- Documentation of secondary education.
- Documentation of university education:
- Diplomas/transcripts that clearly show the subjects studies and the duration/weighting of each subject.
- Subject descriptions (for example copied from your university’s programme catalogue)
- Description of the grading scale used.
- TOELF/IELTS test certificate (if appliccable).
- 1-3 recent, signed reference letters.
All documents should be in English. If the original language of a document is not English, an official translation should be submitted in addition to the original.
If you do not submit officially certified copies/originals of your application documents, any offer of admission will be on the condition that you do so.
If you have changed your name, or your name does not appear the same on all documents, please enclose an official attestation of name change.
