In the group of Biomolecular Analysis, we have a vacancy for a PhD student in the project “Microinterface techniques for coupling of capillary gas chromatography to biological assays’.
Research Project
The project is sponsored by NWO Chemical Sciences. The project constitutes the development of novel technologies comprising high efficient GC separations combined with both MS identification and biological assay technologies reporting biological activities and identities of compounds in mixtures simultaneously. Main focus will be on bioactive compound analysis in the drug discovery and development area and in food research.
Job Description
In drug discovery and in food research, the presence of bioactive compounds in mixtures plays a crucial role. In this PhD project, novel interfaces will be developed and implemented in between GC separations and on-line biochemical assay formats. Data interpretation is based on the correlation of peaks detected in biochemical traces with corresponding peaks in the MS chromatograms, allowing rapid structure elucidation of unknown bioactive substances presentn in complex mixtures. This way and with a focus on compound libraries more suitable for GC separation than LC separation, novel and selective “biochemical noses” will be developed that allow characterization of many diverse samples matrixes (e.g. extracts from tropical origin, natural fragrances, venomous materials from certain plants and animals).
Requirements
The PhD candidate should possess a MSc in (analytical/pharmaceutical) chemistry. Familiarity with GC and bioassays is preferential. Since interfacing of analytical tools with biochemical technologies plays a dominant role in the project, candidates with technical “hands-on” skills and practical experience in the analytical and/or bio-analytical will be preferred.
Appointment
The appointment will be initially for one year. If the results are successful the appointed period will be prolonged for in totally 4 years, intended to result in a dissertation. Gross monthly salary starts at € 1.956,- in the first year and increases to € 2.502,- in the last year of the appointment.
