The Department of Political Science at the Faculty of Social Sciences at the VU University Amsterdam invites applications for a position as Postdoctoral Researcher in Political Science, specializing in democratic representation in the European Union.

The Department of Political Science (www.politicalscience.nl) is a vibrant, small, high quality department offering a full range of degree programmes in Political Science (BSc, MSc, MPhil, PhD). These programmes integrate comparative politics, European Union politics and international relations, while providing students with the opportunity to specialise within this broad context. The
main themes addressed in the teaching curriculum are closely related to the Department’s Research Programme (entitled Multi-Level Governance in EUrope and Beyond).
Tasks
The Postdoctoral position has come available due to the department’s participation in the RECON-programme (‘Reconstituting Democracy in Europe’), a large-scale European research project supported by the European Commission’s Sixth Framework Programme for Research (see www.reconproject.eu). The Postdoctoral researcher is expected to undertake research on the
evolution of democratic and constitutional institutions in the European Union. In particular, she or he is expected to make a substantive contribution to the analysis of interparliamentary coordination between national parliaments and between them and the European Parliament on EU issues, drawing on, and developing, the theoretical notion of a ‘Multilevel Parliamentary Field of the European Union’ (central to RECON WP3, subproject 2, but with links to RECON WP2 and WP9). This research is to lead to intermediate publications in peer-reviewed journals and/or edited volumes as they will be conceived within the RECON-project.
Besides the research tasks, the successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the common tasks as they arise within the department and the RECON-project.
Requirements
The applicant must hold (or soon hold) a doctorate in Political Science with a specialization in Political Theory or Comparative Politics and will preferably have an active research profile as evidenced by (refereed, international) publications. He or she has a strong affinity with normative political theory and is familiar with the field of comparative European politics (including the European Union). The candidate must be fluent in English.
Conditions and Salary
The appointment is for a fixed 2-year term starting from December 1st, 2007, and will be in the rank of Postdoctoral Researcher. Gross monthly salary ranges from € 2.279,- to € 3.597,- (salary scale 10), depending on experience. Salary scales are determined according to the collective rules (CAO) of the Dutch universities.
