Grant and Application Information for Third Millennium Foundation Human Rights Fellowships 2007-08
Program Description
The Third Millennium Foundation (TMF) established its Human Rights Fellowships in 2004 in order to support young social entrepreneurs to become human rights leaders. The TMF Human Rights Fellowships provide financial support for one year to recently graduated undergraduate and graduate students to spend six months interning with a NGO in the Global North and six months with an NGO in the Global South. Preference is given to work with a grassroots organization. One of the NGOs should be located in the country where the fellow intends to pursue her/his professional career.
Although they were originally designed to provide support to recently graduated students in the United States and Europe, this focus has now expanded. Beginning in 2007, the TMF Human Rights Fellowships will take a further step toward TMF’s global commitment by soliciting applications from candidates in the Global South in addition to the Global North.
Through the unique design of this program, TMF Human Rights Fellows are not only able to gain valuable experiences in human rights, they are also able to help build the capacity of local, national, and international NGOs. The program builds North-South networks, collaborations, and friendships and provides young leaders frontline experience in human rights advocacy. By relying on solicitations from partner universities throughout the world, the TMF Fellowships further strengthen the relationships between on-the-ground human rights work and academia.
Each Fellowship carries a stipend of US$24,000 for the full year, with the possibility of a supplement for exceptionally high travel or accommodation costs.
Overview of the Program
The TMF Human Rights Fellowships are administered by the Center for the Study of Human Rights (CSHR) at Columbia University. TMF and CSHR work with partner universities in the Global North and Global South to solicit applications. The listing of partner universities will be updated periodically. Applicants not affiliated with a partner university are welcome to apply. Candidates interested in applying should review the application guidelines below and submit their application by email to hrfellowship@tmf-tolerance.org by January 15, 2007.
Finalists will be advised by CSHR on the development of a full-year work plan, including identifying appropriate partner NGOs, establishing contacts, and outlining expectations for the Fellowship year.
Once the project has been determined feasible, finalists will be officially awarded with the Fellowship. The program begins in August or September of the year of the award. CSHR will provide mentorship to the Fellows throughout their Fellowship.
Ideal Candidates
The TMF Human Rights Fellowship program is designed to support young and innovative individuals who have real potential to become human rights leaders. The ideal candidates are passionate about human rights issues. In addition, candidates should have demonstrated abilities, clear interests and knowledge in a specific area or areas of human rights, and a strong record of
commitment and follow through.
Applicants should be recently graduated from undergraduate or graduate school at the time that the Fellowship is scheduled to begin. If the applicants attend one of the TMF partner universities, they should apply through their university; otherwise they may apply directly by email to hrfellowship@tmf-tolerance.org.
Applicants are initially asked to submit a detailed resume or curriculum vita, official university transcript, personal statement that makes clear how the TMF Human Rights Fellowship aligns with future career plans, a statement of suggested thematic or regional interests and proposed areas of work, and two or three recommendations letters, at least one from a professor familiar with the

Iam first year student persuing Amaster of Arts Human Rights at Makerere University-Uganda, am now in semester two. In Augst 2007, i will be going to the field to carry out some reseach in one of the NGO’S In Uganda as a partial fulfilment for the award of the Master degree in Human Rights. If there is any area of human rights in which you have interest in Uganda, kindly send it to me to and i resaerch on it with your surpport(finacially and morally) as i build my capacity on human rights issues and advocacy. As you have always heard and about Ugandan leaders abusing the rights of people. Our current Government also has resorted to Gross abuse of human rights.
