Germany & Ireland – 2007 UNESCO – VOCATIONS PATRIMOINE Fellowships in World Heritage Studies

UNESCO has launched the selection process for five new Fellowships for World Heritage Site Managers offered through the UNESCO-VOCATIONS PATRIMOINE Programme. Professionals involved in the management, safeguarding and development of World Heritage sites as well as young people intending to pursue a career in these areas are invited to submit applications to UNESCO before 31 March 2007.

The UNESCO-VOCATIONS PATRIMOINE World Heritage Site Managers Programme aims to enhance the capacity of professionals presently working or intending to work in the management, conservation and promotion of World Heritage sites*. It was launched in January 2006 as a result of a partnership between UNESCO and the French non-governmental organization Association VOCATIONS PATRIMOINE, supported by the multinational groups AXA and MAZARS as well as the French Ministry of Culture and Communication.

The two-year Fellowships aim to train a new generation of professional World Heritage site managers, a career crucial for the safeguarding of global heritage. The fellowships cover the costs for a university degree course and a year of field work in an innovative project on site.

The Fellowships are offered in connection with the Master of Arts in World Heritage Studies at Brandenburg Technical University, Cottbus, Germany (http://www.tu-cottbus.de/whs), and with the Master of Science in World Heritage Management at University College Dublin, Ireland (http://www.ucd.ie/cpe) for the academic year beginning in 2007. Applicants must be under 45 years of age and should either be in the process of applying to one of these courses or already accepted. Each Fellowship covers tuition fees and airfare between the fellow’s home, the university and the World Heritage property where the field work takes place; a monthly stipend of Euro 1300 goes towards living expenses and mandatory health insurance.

In addition to proven academic excellence, candidates will be required to present an innovative research proposal on a management issue at a World Heritage property to be carried out as part of the Fellowship. The proposal should explicitly support the goals and priorities of the World Heritage Committee in the field of World Heritage management (http://whc.unesco.org/). Candidates who wish to focus their research on the management of a property on the List of World Heritage in Danger will receive special attention.

Application forms are available at the website (http://whc.unesco.org). Applicants should submit their completed applications to their country’s official national liaison body for UNESCO. This is usually the National Commission (for the list of National Commissions, see ‘Communities’ section at http://portal/unesco.org), which will select a maximum of two candidates from each country. Priority will be given to applicants from developing countries and to professionals already working at a World Heritage site.

*The World Heritage List currently includes 830 cultural, natural and mixed properties. These include 644 cultural, 162 natural and 24 mixed properties in 138 States Parties. Among them, 31 are inscribed on the List of World Heritage in Danger.
