Sweden – Chalmers University of Technology PhD Position in Optical Fiber Communication

The Photonics Laboratory in the Department of Microtechnology and Nanoscience at Chalmers University of Technology, Göteborg, Sweden, has a PhD student position available for research on fiber optic communication and related studies. The research area is described below.

Fiber optic parametric amplifiers and applications
We have been working on fiber optic parametric amplifiers (FOPA) and their applications since the late 1990s and were the first group in the world to demonstrate net gain in continuous operation (as opposed to pulsed) in the year 2000. FOPAs are unique in many ways when comparing with other types of amplifiers as they react almost instantaneously; can reach 0-dB noise figure; are uni-directional (only gain in forward direction) and polarized; and generate a phase-conjugated idler wave at a new frequency. The key components of an FOPA are the high power, single wavelength laser that serves as an optical pump, and a specifically tailored highly nonlinear, low dispersion optical fiber. This year we demonstrated a world record gain in any kind of single-stage optical amplifier (70 dB).

FOPAs have a variety of applications (apart from amplification) such as: All-optical ultrafast sampling, time-division demultiplexing, pulse generation; wavelength & data format conversion, optical limiting & signal regeneration, tunable optical filters, delays and lasers, etc.

In this project we wish tofurther expand our successful work in the areas of FOPAs. There are several very interesting sub-areas to investigate and which are also very relevant for several practical applications. These include the amplification of optical phase modulated signals with very high efficiency (e.g. for free-space optical communication links) and all-optical sampling techniques to measure not only the intensity of the light (as we do today) but also the optical phase to form so-called constellation diagrams.

The research conductedhere will be a mix of experimental work and numerical work with large industry relevance. We collaborate with other groups in the world (e.g in Tokyo and in San Diego) and extended stays there is a possibility.

We seek a PhD student with a Masters degree in Electrical Engineering or Applied Physics (or an equivalent degree), preferably with good knowledge in digital communication, electromagnetics, and optoelectronics. Experience in the areas of simulations, high frequency electronics, and general experimental measurement techniques are merits. You should be a good team player and have an ability to take initiative.
