In January 2005 the storm Gudrun caused massive damage to the forests in southern Sweden. Methods to detect, estimate and map storm damage with airborne and space borne sensors are now under development and will bring faster damage assessment for areas that are hit by future storms. The project will be focused on the use of synthetic aperture radars on three new satellites and one airborne system and will involve analysis and modeling of fully polarimetric data from several frequency bands. Possibilities to detect estimate and map other changes in the forest cover, e.g. clear-cuts and thinning, will also be investigated.
The Ph.D. student will work in the Radar Remote Sensing group at the Department of Radio and Space Science of Chalmers University of Technology. Suitable background for candidates is a M.Sc. in Engineering Physics, Electrical Engineering or equivalent. Experience of Matlab and radar remote sensing are beneficial.
