PhD Studentship for the Department of Hematology at University Medical Center Rotterdam

Netherlands – PhD Studentship for the Department of Hematology at University Medical Center Rotterdam

The Department of Hematology at the Erasmus University Medical Center runs an ambitious research program in the field of hematological malignancies (e.g. leukemia, myeloma, lymphoma) and coagulation with an orientation on normal and neoplastic development of blood cells and lymphoid organs and stem cell research, both with basic, translational and clinical focus, and it accommodates a state of the art infrastructure for cell biological, genomic and clinically applied research.

The project will study the role of the bone marrow microenvironment in the initiation and leukemic evolution of bone marrow failure syndromes and aims to elucidate whether cellular elements and molecular pathways in the bone marrow microenvironment govern disease pathogenesis and tumorigenesis in these conditions. Additionally the laboratory strives to translate this understanding to human disease and explore therapeutic modalities aimed at targeting the bone marrow niche in treating these disorders.

The project will involve the study of recently established in vivo disease models, in vitro systems, as well as human patient material using stem cell transplantation assays, in vitro co-culture systems, molecular biology (including transduction/ transfection of primary cells), confocal fluorescence microscopy, flow-cytometry, array-based DNA/RNA analysis and gene sequencing. The project will be performed in interaction with the participants of the Erasmus Stem Cell Institute and in collaboration with the Center for Regenerative Medicine, Harvard Medical School and Harvard Stem Cell Institute in Boston, U.S.A. Candidates will have the opportunity to be trained in Boston.

Requirements
You are a highly-motivated graduate with a background in medicine/(molecular) biology or a related field to conduct research into the role of the bone marrow microenvironment in the initiation and leukemic evolution of bone marrow failure syndromes. Previous research experience in murine models and molecular biology would be advantageous. Candidates must be available to start at short notice.
