The award will be for Home/EU students only due to a requirement of Medical Research Council funding. It will last for a period of three years and include fees and an annual stipend of £13, 290, rising annually. NB. Some EU applicants may be eligible for Fees only. Successful applicants should be in a position to start the scholarships on 01 February 2010.
Research theme: rehabilitation and digital technology
Investigating the effect of new technology on function in older people with persistent pain
Following a systematic review of the literature, the research student will develop a protocol to address the following aims:
- investigate the scope of new technologies to improve function in older people with persistent pain
- investigate the effects of a selected technology on physical and psychological function
- investigate the mechanism underlying any effects.
A key part of the project will involve an experimental study comparing the application of new technology with standard rehabilitation. Within this, there will be an in depth qualitative exploration of users’ thoughts about the value of the technology. Participants will be older people with persistent pain recruited from NHS and other sources.
