Bonn International Graduate School in Mathematics
The Bonn International Graduate School in Mathematics (BIGS-Mathematics), embraced by the Hausdorff Center for Mathematics, a Cluster of Excellence established within the German government’s Excellence Initiative, offers a PhD program in mathematics based upon the well-known teaching and research tradition of the Department of Mathematics and the Max-Planck- Institute for Mathematics.
There are currently more than 130 PhD students in the program which offers a wide range of lecture courses, graduate seminars, research seminars, and winter/summer schools. The language of instruction is English. Several doctoral grants (Hausdorff scholarships) of 1100 euros per month for a maximum of 3 years can be awarded, beginning October 2009 and April 2010. The grants are supplemented by a family allowance, if applicable. In addition, there are several qualifying grants of 800 euros per month for a qualifying year.
Application deadline 31 May 2009 and 15 January 2010 for admission October 2009 and April or October 2010 respectively.
For 5 students there are particular two-year qualifying scholarships of 800 Euros per month. These scholarships are intended to attract students with an excellent Bachelor degree in mathematics from outside Germany who wish to enter a preparatory phase for our PhD program. There is the option of completing a regular Master degree in this context, if desired. The courses taken in the preparatory phase – all taught in English – can be applied toward a Master degree.
Application deadline for the two-year qualifying scholarships is June 12, 2009.
