Global Change in the Marine Realm

Funded by the Excellence Initiative of the German federal and state governments this Graduate School aims at educating young scientists in the field of marine sciences. Within a global-change framework these encompass the natural sciences as well as the humanities. Besides becoming experts in their special field the PhD students will get a solid background across many disciplines of marine sciences.

Structured into four Research Areas

  • Ocean and Climate
  • Coastal Zone Processes
  • Marine Ecology and Biogeochemistry
  • Challenges to Society

the Graduate School covers a variety of disciplines. It offers a well-structured curriculum with a broad research training programme and the possibility to compete for internal funds.

Operating in close co-operation with the Max Planck Institute for Marine Microbiology and the Center for Tropical Marine Ecology in Bremen, and with the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research and the German Maritime Museum in Bremerhaven, the Graduate School offers

4 PhD positions (E 13/2 TV-L)

Candidates holding a master or diploma degree are encouraged to submit a self-designed PhD project of three years duration related to one of the four Research Areas. With a starting date of November 1, 2008, these projects should be in line with present marine research topics covered by the Graduate School.
